| | Eliot Lipp Outside CD Eliot Lipp Discography of CDs
It's somewhat ironic that artists look to futuristically inclined styles of the past to retool music of the present day; consider the world of underground hip-hop to be no different. Brooklyn-based beatsmith Eliot Lipp brings his own futuristic take on '80s electro-funk with his 2008 album, THE OUTSIDE. Infusing rugged lo-fi instrumental breaks with slick electronic funk, Lipp masterfully contrasts the music's rough-hewn analog edge with an expert IDM-inflected programming finesse.
Personnel: Kenseth Thibideau (guitar).
URB (Magazine) (p.108) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "The opening plucks on 'The Area' eventually fill out into squelchy bliss, while the angry violence of a drum machine tap-tap-tapped into existence gets quite crunhcy on cuts like 'Baby Tank.'" Eliot Lipp Outside Songs | 1. | Outside, The |

Outside album
$10.15 Mates of State are the husband-wife duo of Kori Gardner on keys of various types and Jason Hammel on drums and occasional keys as well. They both sing with innocent gusto, and their charming voices remind one of wonderful indie pop bands like Papas Fritas and Butterglory in the way they intertwine and twist with naïve fervor. They sound like real people singing about real things, and that is kind of exciting. And they don't use guitars of any kind. And you don't miss them either! Team Boo is the band's fullest sounding, most energy-filled record yet. The duo called in Jim Eno of Spoon and John Croslin, who has worked with Spoon also as well as Beulah and the Mates on their first disc, to produce. Together they have concocted a record that leaps out of the speakers with a feeling of manic joy and excitement. Songs like "Fluke," "Ha Ha," and "Gotta Get a Problem" dance with the energy of kids and reel with the flush of first love. Every now and then the record slows down the pace and deals with heavier issues like on the stately "Parachutes (Funeral Song)" or "An Experiment," but even these songs are blessed with killer hooks and Gardner's and Hammel's angelic vocals. Team Boo is a record that will make even the staunchest nonbelievers believe in the power of simply played, honest, and energetic pop music again. Listening to Mates of State will ...
| | Bloc Party Silent Alarm CD (2005)
Outside CD music
$10.79 On this immensely appealing debut, SILENT ALARM, the London-based quartet Bloc Party fulfills the promise of their barnstorming 2004 singles "Banquet" and "She's Hearing Voices." Led by magnetic frontman Kele Okereke, the band extracts the most fascinating aspects of the previous 25 years of British indie rock and fuses them into a new entity--complete with smarts and heart--never delving into retro-kitsch or slavish imitation.
Okerere's urgent yelp most often recalls a fired-up incarnation of the Cure's Robert Smith, but the sounds the group creates echo everything from Gang of Four's staccato militarism ("Banquet") to the reverberating guitars of the Chameleons ("Price of Gas"). At times, Bloc Party also recalls the ecstatic soundwashes of early-1990s cult pioneers like Ride ("Plans") and Slowdive ("Compliments"). Lyrically, Okerere tilts toward an endearing adolescent pessimism that, even when the music is less than mopey, gives him away as a goth at heart ("and the ravens are leaving the tower/make your peace"). However, at the end of "Price of Gas," when he proclaims "I can tell you how this ends/We're ...

| | Buzzcocks Orgasm Addict - Live CD (1999)
Outside album
$13.19 Anarchy Music, an unfortunately named offshoot of Cleopatra Records, has issued Orgasm Addict Live, a Buzzcocks concert album, without the slightest hint of when or where it was recorded. It's possible that the lack of liner notes might be a passive-aggressive way of disguising the fact this particular recording has been released several times before; recorded at a show in Paris, France on April 12, 1995, these ten songs were the encore for the show released in 1996 as French, and this encore set has surfaced as Paris: Encore du Pain, Live in Paris, and Orgasm Addicts, while it was reunited with the rest of the show on the collection French et Encore du Pain: The Complete 1995 Paris Live. Buzzcocks fans who already own any of the above discs can safely ignore Orgasm Addict Live, and even if you don't, this is hardly a priority item for folks who care about this band. There's already a glut of live Buzzcocks albums on the market, and while Pete Shelley, Steve Diggle, and company were in solid form this evening in 1995, little distinguishes this from most other Buzzcocks live discs, and the unattractive packaging, lack of annotation, short running time (under 28 minutes), and the audio glitch in the middle of the title tune add up to a genuinely shoddy release, despite some fine performances of several of Buzzcocks' hits. Try French or ...
