Audio Mixer: Stefan Glaumann. Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album ...

| | Jim Noir CD (2008)
Plug & Play songs
$10.05 British singer-songwriter Jim Noir's first album, TOWER OF LOVE, bore a strong Beach Boys influence. The self-titled follow-up still owes a bit to Brian Wilson and Company, but the Manchester popmeister has expanded his style outwards. A '60s psych-pop flavor undeniably informs much of the music, but there's a markedly more contemporary feel here, and a greater reliance on electronics. Whether the source is analog or digital, though, the swirling kaleidoscope of sound that enriches JIM NOIR gives a dazzling sheen to these peppy pop confections. A sense of musical history will probably always pervade Noir's music, but this collection suggests that he's no mere pop nostalgia peddler. His debut album Tower of Love set the bar pretty high for the one-chap band that is Jim Noir. The tunes were all super memorable and the sound was a bliss inducing mixture of burbling electronic beats, layered vocals reminiscent of '60s sunshine pop, trippy arrangements that harken back to the heyday of British psychedelia, goofy lyrics that always bring a smile, and instantly familiar melodies. Apparently, Noir liked the sound, too, since his second album replicates it, refines it and, in the best possible way, retreads it. It's easy to cut him and the album some slack since it's only the second one he's released. If it were his third, or fifth, record to have the same sound and feel, then it'd be a problem. On Jim Noir, it's like a second helping of a particularly good meal. Or more specifically, a second giant cupcake with a big glop of frosting on top. The songs are just as bubbly, the lyrics reach acceptable levels of silly (CDs vs. vinyl, going on a holiday, and having songs stuck in your head are some of the topics covered) and Noir generally sounds like he's having the time of his life making this album. The only problem with the record is that there are no stand-out tracks like Tower of Love's "My Patch" or "Eenie Meenie" to be found. As the stereotypical A&R weasel might say; "I don't hear a single." That could be a fatal flaw except that the overall quality of the record is so high and the sound is so perfect, you don't feel like there is something so ...
| | Vancougar Candian Tuxedo CD (2008)
Plug & Play album
$15.55 Vancougar: Eden Fineday (vocals, guitar); Becca Stewart (guitar, bass guitar, background vocals); Megan Johnson (keyboards); CC Rose (drums). Personnel: CC Rose (guitar, piano, drums, percussion, background vocals); Megan Johnson (keyboards, background vocals). Recording information: 2007. Photographer: Ryan Walter Wagner. The second LP from all-female foursome Vancougar demonstrates that the strength of their debut album, Losin' It!, was no fluke. While Losin' It!, recorded in 2005 and finally released in 2007, captured the group's scrappy blend of pop, punk, and garage sounds with a joyous immediacy, 2008's Canadian ...
