On its first Sub Pop release, 2008's SUN GIANT EP, the heralded Seattle group Fleet Foxes presents a mesmerizing five-song set. Often recalling My Morning Jacket on the British folk kick, the young indie-pop act offers up plenty of sonorous vocal harmonies (most notably on the spare title track) and jangly acoustic-guitar lines (see the chiming "English House"), perfectly setting the stage for its highly anticipated full-length debut, RAGGED WOOD. Fleet Foxes cover a lot of territory -- both musical and geographical -- on Sun Giant, their debut EP for Sub Pop. The band's close, pristine harmonies and spare arrangements are at once timeless and a breath of fresh air, sharing roots with '60s folk-rock, 2000s indie pop, and ageless traditional songs. Fleet Foxes feel like they're singing to, and for, themselves on the EP, particularly on the title track, which lingers on their harmonies before drifting off on an acoustic guitar melody. Even on "Drops in the River," which builds from similarly simple beginnings to big drums and plugged-in guitars, the gentle beauty of the Foxes' melodies remains the same. From "English House"'s sparkling autoharps to the dreamy, soft rock-tinged "Mykonos," Sun Giant plays like it was culled from a backpacker's travel journal. With this intimate, organic, and tantalizing first glimpse at their music, Fleet Foxes sound like they've been making music a lot longer than their ages would suggest. Call it old soul music. ~ Heather Phares Sun Giant Music | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Rock CDs | | Label | Sub Pop | | Orig Year | 2008 | | All Time Sales Rank | 19193 | | CD Universe Part number | 7631714 | | Catalog number | 70781 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Apr 08, 2008 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Additional Info | Digipak; Extended Play |

| | National Boxer CD (2007)
Sun Giant
$9.95 The National: Matt Berninger (vocals); Bryce Dessner (guitar); Aaron Dessner, Scott Devendorf (bass guitar); Bryan Devendorf (drums). Personnel: Pauline DeLassus, Carin Besser (vocals); Padma Newsome (violin, viola, organ); Ha Yang Kim (cello); Alex Sopp (flute); Sarah Phillips (clarinet); Rachael Elliott (bassoon); Tim Albright (trombone); Sufjan Stevens (piano); Thomas Bartlett (keyboards). Audio Mixer: Peter Katis. Recording information: Benny's Wash N' Dry, Brooklyn, NY; Brooklyn, NY; Tarquin Studios, Bridgeport, CT; White Sulphur Springs, WV. Arrangers: Aaron Dessner; Bryce Dessner. On 2007's BOXER, the National's second full-length album for the venerable Beggars Banquet label, the Brooklyn-based indie-rock act follows up the lauded ALLIGATOR with another round of melancholy guitar-driven tunes. Led by deep-voiced vocalist Matt Berninger, who often sounds hung-over yet disarmingly articulate, the band excels at brooding mid-tempo songs, as exemplified by the world-weary "Fake Empire," which combines political and personal themes, and "Mistaken for Strangers," a track that recalls NYC peers Interpol, ...
| | Vampire Weekend CD (2008)
Sun Giant
$12.85 Personnel: Ezra Koenig (vocals); Rostam Batmanglij (organ); Chris Baio (bass instrument); Christopher Tomson (drums). Anybody who thought the seemingly bottomless well of musical breakouts from New York would have dried up by winter 2008 got a shock from the rapturous reception given this impressive debut. Foregoing hipster Brooklyn for the more collegiate Upper West Side campus of Columbia, the quartet's music follows suit. This is hardly the loft-party lysergia of their counterparts across the East River; rather, it's a catchy cocktail of ethno-rhythms, psych-lite instrumentation, twee sensibilities, and an Animal Collective-style, anything-goes spirit. Instead of feigning street cred, the band wear their upbringing on their sleeves (literally), with songs about Cape Cod and the polo shirts and deck shoes to match. While Paul Simon's man-child melodies appear all over VAMPIRE WEEKEND, cuts such as the stand-out single "A-Punk" recall another quartet of infamous Africa-plundering, New York preppies: the Talking Heads. With guitarist Ezra Koenig's intricately inventive lines, Chris Tomson's ever-shifting grooves, and Rostam Batmanglij's faux-melodica keyboard melodies, Vampire Weekend have the musical muscle to merit the fever-pitched hype. With the ...
| | Bon Iver For Emma, Forever Ago CD (2008)
Sun Giant
$12.19 Personnel: Christy Smith (vocals, drums); Randy Pingrey (trumpet, trombone). Recording information: Fairall, Raleigh, NC (11/2006-12/2007); The Hunting Cabin, WI (11/2006-12/2007). Photographer: Gilbert Vernon. Recorded in a cabin in Northern Wisconsin in the dead of winter in long sessions intermittently broken up for the chopping and gathering of firewood, FOR EMMA, FOREVER AGO is the impressive debut release from Bon Iver aka Justin Vernon. With warmly recorded acoustic guitars and double-tracked vocals, FOR EMMA sounds like vintage Elliot Smith playing in the Pink Mountaintops. Vernon's voice--alone worth the sticker price--is captivating and multifaceted, as it morphs from wavering falsettos to gospel emotings sometimes within a single phrase. Surprisingly for such an intimate indie record--and particularly for one whose main theme seems to be private anguish--FOR EMMA proved a vibrant seller, registering respectably on both the U.S. and U.K. album charts, garnering many inclusions near the top of 2008 critical favorites lists, and making an unlikely star out of Vernon. Bon Iver is the work of Justin Vernon. He isolated himself in a remote cabin in Wisconsin for almost four months, writing and recording the songs on For Emma, Forever Ago, his haunting debut album. A few parts (horns, drums, and ...

Sun Giant
$11.59 Personnel: Gwil Owen (flute). Audio Mixer: Phil Ek. Recording information: Avast Studio, Seattle, WA (2007); London Bridge Studio (2007). Arrangers: Robin Pecknold; Nicholas Peterson; Casey Wescott; Skyler Skjelset. With their self-titled full-length Sub Pop debut, Fleet Foxes unveil an impressively confident and engaging set of indie-folk tunes. While singer/guitarist Robin Pecknold's warm, resonant voice clearly brings to mind My Morning Jacket's Jim James, his tight vocal harmonies with other members of the Seattle-based band evoke vintage Beach Boys more than anything else (see the airy "He Doesn't Know Why"). And though the group's gentle instrumentation and pastoral aesthetic affectionately acknowledge 1960s/'70s British folk, they steer clear of self-consciously quirky "freak folk" meanderings, and opt instead for immaculately crafted chamber-pop, best evinced by the swooning "White Winter Hymnal." One of the finest indie releases of 2008, FLEET FOXES casts an undeniably enchanting spell. Borrowing from ageless folk and classic rock (and nicking some of the best bits from prog and soft rock along the way), on their self-titled debut album Fleet Foxes don't just master ...
