(2 Customer Reviews)
Consisting of 12 extremely short, noisy tracks followed by four extended pieces each clocking in at around 15 minutes, 13 BLUES FOR THIRTEEN MOONS is the 2008 offering by the Silver Mt. Zion ensemble, here credited as Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band. As on all of the band's projects, 13 BLUES reflects the challenging post-rock aesthetic of Efrim Menuck, also of Godspeed You Black Emperor, leading listeners through passages of startling symphonic rock (the title track) and bleak melancholia ("Black Water Blowed/Engine Broke Blues").
A Silver Mt. Zion: Efrim Menuck, Ian Ilavsky (vocals, electric guitar); Jessica Moss, Sophie Trudeau (vocals, violin); Beckie Foon (vocals, cello); Thierry Amar (vocals, bass instrument, electric bass); Eric Craven (vocals, drums).
Personnel: Brian Lipson (trumpet); Nadia Moss (organ).Uncut (p.103) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A]ll rickety brass, lurching rhythms, sepia-tinted, wide open arrangements and a scree of guitars, over which leader Efrim delivers his ragged-trousered vocal holler..." The Wire - "[A]ll seven members take up the microphone for repetitive chants and interplay of staggered vocals, which in conjunction with Menuk's emotive lead wail are ominous and powerful." CMJ - "Each track crackles and fizzles like old vinyl spinning....Each dirge is artfully punctuated with end-of-days string arrangements." Mojo (Publisher) (p.112) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[F]our epic, soul-stirring protest numbers which marry guitar scree, tumultuous rhythms and elegant orchestration." Harp (magazine) (p.118) - "Rage and disillusionment take shape in crashing, cataclysmic percussion and keening ecstasies of string..." 13 Blues For Thirteen Moons Music Thee Silver Mt Zion Memorial O 13 Blues For Thirteen Moons Songs | 1. | [Untitled] | |

| 13 Blues For Thirteen Moons Music 13 Blues For Thirteen Moons Music Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) Could have been even better? 13 Blues For Thirteen Moons is like your very first girlfriend. First it is the best thing in the world, but once you get used to it you start finding a lot of things to improve...
Music is beautiful, song structures and interesting, but the album is not too well produced. Next time they should spend a little more time in the singing booth.
This is very honest album and I have to give credit to these musicians for courage to do what they like themselves. You can hear that they have put their hearts and souls into this. Submitted by teroi (Espoo, Finland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
ASMZ get dirtier, heavier Anyone who has heard them play live in the last 2-3 years has already heard these songs. Very different arrangements on this release though, than live versions of the pieces, and if you're a fan of the direction they are headed you will not be disappointed. This is a loud, dirty, grungy record compared with the delicate floating strings of "He has left us alone." The first track opens with a gypsy march and vocals as "1,000,000 died to make this sound" then crashes into an instrumental passage with heavy drums, almost 70s funk/soul strings, and thick guitar lines. I wasn't impressed by the title track, 16 minutes of meandering and wailing, it's not quite "filler" but as a serious ASMZ lover they could have done better. "Black Waters Blowed" starts off bleak and out of tune on purpose, trudging along with dread until fading into "Engine Broke Blues" which creeps you out with a NEIL YOUNG influenced guitar riffage repeated over and over, mixed with Efrim's vocals of warning and despair. This is the best track on the album in my opinion, I can't get it out of my head. The album finishes with "Blind Blind Blind" a favorite of live-ASMZ shows. A simply beautiful, multi-layered piece heavy on vocals, with delicate plucking bass and moving strings. Performed quieter than live versions, but with just as much heart and soul. Highly recommended!!! Submitted by Wes (Suffolk, VA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Elliott Smith Xo CD (1998)
13 Blues For Thirteen Moons CD music
$11.99 The Cinderella-esque climb from lo-fi indie cult artist to Grammy nominee/major label darling must have been a perilous one for Smith, who makes the leap to the big time here after three well-regarded albums on small labels. He's lost none of his bite, though. The production values on XO may be slightly higher, but Smith's vision remains undiluted.
The production, centered around acoustic guitar augmented by keyboards and lush vocal harmonies, recalls pop icons like the Beach Boys (especially on the closing acapella cut), Beatles and Big Star, but this is no sunny Cali-pop album. Leavening the instrumental brightness are Smith's Nick Drake-ish whisper and his thoroughly downcast lyrics, which cast him squarely in the Mark Eitzel/Smog camp of unrelenting self-effacement and misery. The combination of Smith's internal angst and his melodic pop constructions makes for a compelling artistic tension.
Recorded at Sunset Sound, Sound Factory, Ocean Way, Sonora, Los Angeles, California; Jackpot!, Portland, Oregon.

| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
13 Blues For Thirteen Moons songs
$12.05 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made ...
