Building music out of a flurry of hazy guitars indebted to both the Stooges and European black metal, Melbourne's Grey Daturas are more interested in texture and feel than in traditional song craft. RETURN TO DISRUPTION is the definition of "avant garde," both meditative and mind-scrambling in equal measure. Vaguely menacing and discordant noises build a sense of nameless dread on "Undisturbed," and "Neuralgia" is an enveloping cloud of distortion as thick and disorienting as the album's cover. You won't hear RETURN TO DISRUPTION on the radio anytime soon, but you may hear it in a nightmare.
Recording information: Head Gap (08/2006).
Grey Daturas: Robert Mayson, Bonnie Mercer, Robert Macmanus.
Audio Mixer: Neil Thomason.
The Wire (p.68) - "The sound here is like a more amphetamined Bardo Pond, with long monochord jams punked to oblivion via fast drums and dissolving guitar textures." Return To Disruption Music Grey Daturas Return To Disruption Songs Return To Disruption Review

Return To Disruption album
$10.69 ALTAR acts as a Melvins family reunion of sorts as two of their most obvious sonic offspring--Sunn O))) and Boris--join together for a feast of slow-and-low heavy drone. Given both of their deconstructionist takes on the Melvins' stoner riffs and their abilities to find a strong meditative quality in feedback, the bands make a perfect match and their visions meld seamlessly. Guests include Soundgarden's Kim Thayil and the Sweet Hereafter's Jesse Sykes--the latter adding beautifully creepy female vocals.
Initial pressing included bonus disc with bonus track.

| | Explosions In The Sky All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone CD (2007)
Return To Disruption CD music
$12.19 Back in the mid 1990s, when post-rock dominated the indie landscape, instrumental bands offered a sonic vision beyond what they saw to be the tired rock clichés of 4/4 time and G-C-D riffs, but very often negated the simple energy that makes rock so vital in the process. On their second full-length ALL OF A SUDDEN I MISS EVERYONE, Explosions in the Sky ...

| | Kinski Down Below It's Chaos CD (2007)
Return To Disruption songs
$11.59 Onstage and over the course of several previous albums, Seattle thunder purveyors Kinski honed the art of staring Mount St. Helens in the mouth and spelunking for the explosive rock powers within--an experience that for the listener worked much more in the former setting than in the latter. On DOWN BELOW IT'S CHAOS the quartet keep that live power intact, but display a deeper understanding of translating the intensity to record. The results make for what is by far their best record and a classic of heavy millennial neo-Kraut.
The eight songs offer newfound pleasures for Kinski fans: pop hooks, dynamics, and, perhaps most shockingly, vocals (see "Dayroom at Narita Int'l" and "Punching Goodbye Out Front"), while gentle interludes such as "Boy, Was I Mad" and "Plan, Steal, ...

| | Adam Lambert For Your Entertainment CD (2009)
Return To Disruption CD music
$11.18 With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern R&B, and the vague Euro strains of new millennium teen pop. All this makes For Your Entertainment very, very modern in a way few mainstream pop albums are in 2009, whether they're products of the American Idol/19 machine or not: Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Rivers Cuomo, P!nk, Lady GaGa, Linda Perry, Ryan ...

Return To Disruption songs
$29.79 Japanese remastered 2004 reissue packaged in a limited edition miniature LP sleeve.
After using SLOW TRAIN COMING, SAVED and SHOT OF LOVE as sounding boards for his born-again Christianity, Bob Dylan took a trip to Israel amidst rumors that he was repudiating his new faith and embracing his Judaic roots. Upon returning from his overseas excursion, Dylan went straight into the studio with co-producer Mark Knopfler and emerged with INFIDELS, a record that found the legendary singer-songwriter recording songs that were more of a political nature than a religious one.
Backed by a band that includes Knopfler and ex-Stone Mick Taylor on guitar and the legendary reggae rhythm section of Sly ...
