Nominated for four Oscars, including Best Picture, this $117.5 million-grossing hit stars Ellen Page as a pregnant teenager trying to find caring adoptive parents (Jason Batman, Jennifer Garner). Bonuses: commentary, deleted scenes, gag reel, cast and crew jam, screen tests. The word "quirky" has become the quick and easy way to describe films such as LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE and LARS AND THE REAL GIRL that straddle the lines between indie and studio films and comedy and drama. While JUNO fits into that same category, this distinctive dramedy is in a class all its own. Ellen Page (X-MEN: THE LAST STAND) stars as Juno, a witty teenage girl whose boredom doesn't lead her to the mall. Instead, she makes a one-time trip into the arms of her best friend Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera). When Juno discovers that she's pregnant, she's forced to grow up fast as she tries to find adoptive parents for her quickly growing child.
JUNO might have a lot of strengths--Page's award-worthy performance, a pitch-perfect soundtrack, excellent direction from Jason Reitman--but it's the screenwriting debut of writer Cody Diablo that makes this such a winning film. Famous for her blog and her book CANDY GIRL: A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF AN UNLIKELY STRIPPER, Diablo has a unique voice and an incredible ear for dialogue. But even the nearly perfect script wouldn't sound so good if it weren't for the talents of these actors, particularly Page. She won raves for her first major role in HARD CANDY, but this performance proves it wasn't a fluke. The rest of the cast, especially J.K. Simmons as Juno's dad, is just as worthy of attention. JUNO continues Cera's cinematic ascent after his success with the hit comedy SUPERBAD, and his ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT costar Jason Bateman uses his dry delivery to great effect as a potential parent for Juno's baby. Songs from Kimya Dawson perfectly capture the film's tone with the music's sweet, smart, and funny sounds. Theatrical Release: December 5, 2007
Juno Reviews: "[There's] room for the deeper emotional lives of all these characters to emerge. They do so beautifully, achingly, artfully."-- Susan Green, Box Office "[The film] takes on surprising delicacy and emotional depth. The snappy one-liners are a brilliant distraction, Ms. Cody's way of clearing your throat for the lump you're likely to find there in the movie's last scenes."-- A. O. Scott, New York Times 4 stars out of 4 -- "JUNO, a likably cynical comedy, is actually about hope....A film bristling with vitality and heart....JUNO is charming, honest and terrifically acted."-- Claudia Puig, USA Today 3.5 stars out of 4 -- "The devil in Cody's script lets in wit, anger, distress and the pain of romantic longing. JUNO is more than a few smiles -- it makes you laugh deeply. It's one from the bruised heart."-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "Jennifer Garner has never been lovelier or more affecting....Delightful and good-hearted..." -- Grade: A--- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly "JUNO is hilarious an sweet-tempered, perceptive and surprisingly grounded. The central performance, from Ellen Page, is beautifully judged."-- Geoffrey Macnab, Sight and Sound 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]his is Page's triumph, spitting out smart-ass lines like she thought MEAN GIRLS was soft and GHOST WORLD held too optimistic a worldview....It's whip-smart, cool, and very, very funny."-- Chris Roberts, Uncut 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] perfectly judged three-act structure that follows the emotional highs and lows of Juno's winter-to-summer pregnancy, the film saves its aces for last."-- Empire Staff, Empire Juno | List Price | $14.98 (You save $4.79) | | Studio | 20th Century Fox | | Orig Year | 2007 | | All Time Sales Rank | 6629 | | CD Universe Part number | 7632467 | | Catalog number | 2250687 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Apr 15, 2008 | | Rating | PG-13 (MPAA) | | Rating Reason | for mature thematic material, sexual content and language | | Running Time | 92 Minutes | | Additional Info | Widescreen | | Movie Details | Color; Widescreen |
Juno Movie Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Go To A High School, It's Cheaper! I love Diablo Cody...I think she is a talented writer, however, this movie, we see everyday by going by a high school. This is the main reason why most teens are still beliving it's cool to be pregnant. Giving them a false sense that a quick antidote & an hour & a half later, all will right itself. This movie is ok at best, and the best part of the movie still to me is Jason Bateman. Submitted by Courtnye (Chicago,IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
the best film of 2007 Juno is my favorite film of 2007. It is about a whip smart 16 year old girl named Juno (Ellen Page) who gets knocked up by her nerdy boyfriend Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera). Not being able to go through with an abortion,Juno decides to give the baby up for adoption. She and her best friend Leah ( Olivia Thirbly) find just the right couple (Jason Batmen and Jennifer Gardener) in an ad in the penny saver and Juno immediately sets up an appointment. The film goes on from there and you are completely absorbed in it. Diablo Cody's oscar winning script is brilliant, filled with quotable dialogue and sharp characters. Ellen Page gives the best performance of the year and should have won the oscar for her authentic performance. Page has terrific comic timing, but she brings depth and vulnerability to the character which is quite an achievement. Michael Cera,Jennifer Gardener,Jason Batmen,Olivia Thirbly, J.k Simmons, and Allison janey are excellent in supporting roles and Jason reitman directs skillfully. This movie is one of my favorite movies and a must see. Submitted by joe (manhattan,ny,usa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Missed the hype on this one. totally missed the hype this movie got & I had how it leaves viewers believing that after you give birth you can just walk away & act like it never happened. I don't think that is exactly what we are supposed to be teaching the youth of America?
I really did love Page as the main role. She reminds me a lot of myself, with the sarcastic smart-ass outlook on everything. Some of the things that came out of her mouth would def. be something I would say. I also thought Cera played the perfect geek role. Good combination & did have a few laughs, just wasn't worth all hype made over it. Submitted by lw (Iowa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A lighter side of teenage pregnancy? It's hard to look on the lighter side of teenage prenancy, there really isn't one, but this film manages to find one; with Juno's quick wit, Bleeker the geeky boyfriend, and her families blunt honesty, it just makes you laugh. Beautifully acted by Ellen Page the film would not have been the same without her. Submitted by de6grace (NEV Dunedin, NZ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$23.45 Co-helmed by WALL-E director Andrew Stanton, FINDING NEMO follows Marlin (voiced by Albert Brooks), an overprotective clown fish father, as he desperately searches the farthest reaches of the sea for his missing son Nemo. Marlin's journey leads him beyond the Great Barrier Reef into deeper and darker waters, where he meets Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), a forgetful yet optimistic blue tang, and a number of not-so-friendly--and often very hungry--aquatic creatures. Meanwhile, little Nemo finds himself in a dentist's fish tank in Syndey, Australia, along with other underwater captives, including Gill (Willem Dafoe), the group's scarred Moorish idol leader. As Nemo works with his new friends on a plan to escape their tank, Marlin and Dory swim closer, but they'll need more than just fins to get into the dentist's office.
This fifth computer-animated outing by Pixar continues the company's remarkable winning streak that began with TOY STORY. Like other Pixar films, FINDING NEMO features a story with heart--this time, a father-and-son tale--and thoroughly charming leads--in this case, Marlin, Nemo, and Dory. And, of course, there's an army of fascinating supporting characters, including Bruce (Barry Humphries), a great white shark on a no-fish diet; Crush (director/screenwriter Stanton), a surfer-dude sea turtle; Peach (Allison Janney), a stuck-to-the-aquarium starfish; and Nigel (Geoffrey Rush), a bold pelican. However, what truly distinguishes NEMO from even its CGI cousins is its stunning depiction of aquatic life, from the colorful creatures on a coral reef to a blue whale on the vast expanse of the open ocean. ...

$14.99 With NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, the Coen Brothers have found a perfect match in Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy. Their adaptation of McCarthy's praised novel is a staggering masterpiece. In this almost impossibly faithful adaptation, the film takes place in a small Texas border town in 1980. Sheriff Bell (a never-been-better Tommy Lee Jones) has ruled the land for years without the use of a gun, but a new brand of reckless lawlessness has taken over his town. Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) is an innocent Everyman with a devoted wife, Carla Jean (Kelly Macdonald), but when he stumbles across a drug deal gone deadly and finds two million dollars, he's determined to keep it for himself. There's only one problem. He's being pursued by one of the most amoral, evil psychopaths that the big screen has ever seen. Wearing an absurd haircut and brandishing a pressurized weapon that's used to murder cattle, Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) creeps forward on his mission to track Moss down and return the money to its rightful owners to save his own skin. As the tension mounts, the body count begins to rise, confirming Sheriff Bell's inability to battle this new wave of modern brutality.
The most striking thing about the Coen Brothers' thriller is their masterly use of silence to create an almost unbearable level of tension. Cinematographer Roger Deakins is once again at the top of his game, beautifully capturing this stark and lonely world. The well-rounded cast is clearly excited to be a part of such a stellar production--particularly Bardem, whose Chigurh is a freakishly mysterious monster, and is certain to haunt viewers long after the ...
| | American Gangster DVDs (2007) 2-Disc Widescreen Unrated
Juno movie DVD
$11.29 British director Ridley Scott may not seem a logical choice for this truly American crime drama, but the filmmaker does an excellent job. The film is based on a true story and set in 1968 Harlem, where Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) is a driver for Bumpy Johnson, one of the top figures in the city's criminal world. When Bumpy dies, Lucas swoops in, taking over his predecessor's empire and expanding it over the next few years with his sale of a particularly potent brand of heroin. Meanwhile, New Jersey cop Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe) begins to investigate the New York drug world and discovers that there's a new power in town.
Thanks to screenwriter Steve Zallian, as well as Washington and Crowe, AMERICAN GANGSTER creates a convincing portrait of two men who are neither entirely good nor entirely bad. Washington plays Lucas as a man who buys his mother a palatial home but doesn't hesitate to beat his brother's head against a window. Crowe's Roberts may turn in a million-dollar find, but he cheats on his wife. Sadly, they only meet onscreen toward the end of the film, but the minimal interaction between the two Oscar winners is fascinating. Even though the focus is on Lucas and Roberts, AMERICAN GANGSTER is filled with a wealth of strong characters played by talented actors. It seems everyone with a SAG card turns up for the film, including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Josh Brolin, Ted Levine, John Hawkes, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Carla Gugino, Ruby Dee, Joe Morton, and rappers T.I. and RZA. It's an epic film, with a run time of over two and a half hours, but ...

Juno video
$14.45 Director Paul Thomas Anderson's THERE WILL BE BLOOD is a masterly, unflinching examination of a consummately evil man. Daniel Plainview (via a transcendent performance by the great Daniel Day-Lewis) is, as he likes to remind those around him, an oil man: he finds it, he drills for it, and he makes money from it. Following a tip from a visitor named Paul Sunday, whose family sits atop a veritable ocean of oil, Plainview travels to the town of New Boston, California, with his young son. Sunday's preacher brother Eli (both roles are played by the excellent Paul Dano) grudgingly accepts Plainview's ambitions under the condition that he help fund the town church. As Plainview's plans come to fruition, a series of events begin to fracture the insular world he has constructed for himself, pitting Plainview against Sunday and forcing him to become even more vindictive and ruthless.
Anderson proved with BOOGIE NIGHTS and MAGNOLIA that he was adept at handling expansive storylines and layered plots; however, he stakes out a claim here as a new master of the cinematic epic. The film is visually stunning, and alternates between lush widescreen shots of the desert and meticulously composed, darkly lit close-up of his actors, presenting complex images of the American landscape and the souls that dot it. As a narrative, THERE WILL BE BLOOD is told with a sense of economy, yet never at the expense of the film's inherently grand scope. It's difficult to determine precisely what Anderson wants his viewers to take from the experience: the film is, in the end, appropriately complex and ambiguous. THERE WILL BE BLOOD forces us to confront Plainville, who seems to be a larger-than-life ...

$13.55 KNOCKED UP's Katherine Heigl stars in this romantic comedy about a selfless young woman who is trapped in the role of perennial bridesmaid. Set in New York City, the film opens with Jane (Heigl) racing by cab to appear in two friends' weddings in the same night. She is the maid of honor for both fetes, and she rushes back and forth in time to shimmy to both electric slides. She meets Malcolm (James Marsden), a cynical young man who, unbeknownst to her, writes for a newspaper's wedding column. Malcolm is intrigued by the sheer number of times Jane has played bridesmaid, and he secretly decides to write a story about her. To further complicate Jane's life, her younger sister Tess (Malin Akerman) has just come to town and ensnared Jane's longtime crush, George (Edward Burns). When George and Tess become engaged, Jane faces the humiliating prospect of playing bridesmaid in the wedding of her sister and the man she loves. Meanwhile, Malcolm continues hounding Jane, and Jane's life and closet soon explode in a taffeta-tangled mess that forces her to make some big changes.
Heigl is a pleasure to watch, as she has the kind of crowd-pleasing, no-nonsense presence that could ground any film, so 27 DRESSES greatly benefits from her comedic skill and charm. While the film features all of the hallmarks of chick flick fare (wacky best friend, dress-up sequence, obnoxious but strangely attractive love interest) the story often veers into territory that may leave some feeling it stretches even the romantic comedy standards for suspension of disbelief. Heigl deserves comparisons to Julia Roberts for her sheer likability, ...
