Spacemen 3 have always fit well on mixtapes near Big Star. Separated by about a decade, the two bands shared a similar knack for penning songs that could best be described as sublime. Recently Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3 (Spectrum) spent some time in Independence, Mississippi, making a record with Jim Dickinson (Captain Memphis), venerable producer of Big Star's THIRD/SISTERS LOVERS (not to mention countless other albums). The result is nothing if not purely indulgent, but it does offer an amusing and sometimes exciting take on both parties' strongest assets. The standout track is "The Lonesome Death of Johnny Ace," which sounds like a retro futurist song-and-dance man trying in vain to bring Folkways to the Space Age. Most of the material here is not new, but rather new takes on old songs. "Take Your Time" is an old Spectrum cut; "When Tomorrow Hits" is a Mudhoney tune previously covered by Spacemen 3; and there's a soothing stab at the Spacemen's own "Hey Man." Ultimately, the record feels less like a cohesive album and more like two mavericks going at some low-key pop iconclasm, yet it is precisely this that makes INDIAN GIVER a pleasant surprise.

Uncut (p.107) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[The album] pairs Dickinson's swampy rasp with Kember's celestial drones, resulting in a meaty Memphis stew, with more than a pinch of Rugby psych." Spectrum Indian Giver Songs Indian Giver Review

Indian Giver album
$14.75 BLACK SOUNDS OF FREEDOM was originally released on LP in 1977 under the title LOVE CRISIS.
This record is Black Uhuru's first album (though a few very rare singles appeared prior) and is produced by the often-overlooked Prince Jammy. Founder Duckie Simpson was seemingly at a loss when Black Uhuru's first incarnation broke up in the early '70s; however, he was subsequently able to convince Michael Rose (aka Mykal Rose) to join the group, which is where the magic began.
BLACK SOUNDS OF FREEDOM has a lush intensity rivaled by few roots LPs. With a strong dub slant to the rhythm tracks, Michael Rose's voice floats effortlessly on emotional tracks such as "Satan Army Band," and the classic "I Love King Selassie." Rose was and continues to be a master of infusing rhythm tracks ...
| | Black Uhuru Sinsemilla CD (1980) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Indian Giver CD music
$6.99 Only a shade less great than 1981's RED, 1980's SINSEMILLA, Black Uhuru's debut on Island Records, is still mightily impressive. Powered by the songwriting and distinctive, soulful tenor of Michael Rose, and sweetened by the harmonies of Derrick "Duckie" Simpson and Sandra "Puma" Jones (the use of the male/female vocal trio was the group's defining characteristic), Black Uhuru combined roots reggae and hypnotic, almost futuristic grooves. Unlike many roots acts from the '60s and '70s, Black Uhuru wasn't afraid to incorporate keyboard-generated sounds into the mix. Spacey synth accents join earthy rhythms and traditional ...

| Plastic Crimewave Sound No Wonderland CD (2008)
Indian Giver songs
$7.55 For No Wonderland, one of the group's most sprawling and enjoyable albums to date, Plastic Crimewave Sound got in some special guests (including Josephine Foster and some of the Spires That in the Sunset Rise crew as well as spoken word snippets from folks like Devendra Banhart, Tara Burke, and Chris Connelly) and otherwise continued with the understandable principle that there's nothing so good in life as great huge zone/space rock epics informed by the power of acid, feedback, and strutting like a mofo. (And they might be right at that, but one hopes they have good medical insurance.) With the slow-burn rise of "Korean Ghost Ship" setting the tone, moving from slow bass-led moodout to full-on guitar howl charge, No Wonderland takes a full CD length's trip through, well, trips -- a few bummers but mostly successful ones that more often than not assume "Let X = Hawkwind" and then get converted into new equations. The distorted vocals on "Far In/Out" ride over an energetic blast that only gets even more gone later on "Rolling ...

$13.89 Indian music will always have its traditionalists and its contemporary pop artists; this is true in India itself, and it is true in England and other countries that attract a lot of Indian immigrants.
