| | Art Pepper Complete TV Studio Recordings CD (2005) Bonus DVD; Japan
Attitude CD music
$8.89 This remastered collection of alto sax giant Art Pepper's ubiquitous recordings for late night L.A. television from 1957-1964 boasts three bonus tracks; Includes "Cherokee" and "Stormy Weather." 2005, Spanish import.
Alto saxophonist Art Pepper succeeded in bringing his music to television audiences on three different occasions. His debut over this otherwise largely square medium was on The Steve Allen Show of January 18, 1957, with pianist Carl Perkins, bassist Ben Tucker, and drummer Chuck Flores. On March 31, 1957, Pepper performed on Bobby Troup's KABC Stars of Jazz Show, with pianists Larry Bunker and Victor Feldman, bassist Don Payne, and once again Chuck Flores behind the drum set. The vocalist on "Stormy Weather" was Pam Russell. The following day, the quartet heard on The Steve Allen Show reconvened and made a series of recordings for a company that pioneered the prerecorded stereo reel-to-reel tape format, then issued on the Aladdin label (see The Art of Pepper, Vol. 3 on Blue Note). Three alternate takes from this session are included here. Anyone familiar with the grim and at times horrifying details of Pepper's difficult life as a strung-out jailbird will understand the rather ominously intense nature of tracks eight through 10, culled from one of Ralph J. Gleason's Jazz Casual shows, recorded in and presumably televised from San Francisco on May 9, 1964. Fortunately, Gleason made room for the artists to stretch out and express themselves at length; "The Trip" runs for eight and a half minutes and a fascinatingly free-flying "D Section" expands to just ...
| | Steve Lacy Complete Whitey Mitchell Sessions CD (2004) (Import) Import; France
Attitude music CDs
$14.85 French import on Lone Hill Jazz label. Steve Lacy is a prolific soprano saxophonist whose career began in the 1950s. THE COMPLETE WHITEY MITCHELL SESSIONS is a 2004 collection that compiles two recording sessions Lacy did in 1956, one that was issued under the name of the record's bass player Whitey Mitchell. The album contains jazz performances and compositions that were eventually considered avant or progressive for their time.
Although this compilation was issued in 2004 under soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy's name, the two original records which make up this Lone Hill Jazz CD were separate dates issued under the leadership of bassist Whitey Mitchell (brother of bassist Red Mitchell) and tenor horn player Tom Stewart by ABC-Paramount. The first ten selections come from Mitchell's sessions, with snappy arrangements of standards contributed by Neal Hefti. The sextet also includes Stewart, trumpeter Don Stratton, guitarist Joe Puma, and drummer Osie Johnson. The leader's bass has a prominent role, though there's plenty of solo space for Lacy, Stratton, and Stewart, too. Although Hefti was primarily arranging standards on this date, he leans more toward cool jazz rather than the swing style associated with his writing for Count Basie. Highlights include the breezy "Strike Up the Band" (with a few nice drum breaks by Johnson), the easygoing "I Let a Song Go out of My Heart," and the beautifully voiced "You Stepped Out of a Dream." The Stewart sessions feature three separate ...

Attitude songs
$15.75 Conflict's 1988 album finds the anarchist punks as combative and confrontational as ever, though by this point they had evolved considerably from their haphazard musical origins into a band that could perform both the sophisticated reggae of "These Things Take Time" and the focused near-metal of "Barricades and Broken Dreams."
Re-issued album with a new guitarist as Conflict attempt ...
