Great White North is the hit comedy album from Bob & Doug McKenzie, better known as SCTV veterans Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas, respectively. There's one serious problem, though. It's not very funny as a whole. The shtick is that the McKenzie brothers are lazy, beer-swilling dimwits who focus on Canadian culture and rely heavily on slang interjections and put-downs like "take off," "beauty, eh?," and "hoser." Only two selections are truly noteworthy. The first is the catchy novelty hit "Take Off," which features Rush's Geddy Lee singing on the chorus. Tom Lehrer recorded rather sporadically starting in the 1950s then abruptly retired in the mid-'60s from his unique solo musical comedy act. He's a competent pianist with a voice that is perfect for his original material. This compilation combines both of his records that were originally pressed and sold privately on the Lehrer label, which he later re-recorded with improved sound for Reprise as Songs by Tom Lehrer and the live concert An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer. While the differences between this CD and the Reprise versions are minimal, other than a little more muffled piano sound on these earlier recordings, it's fun to hear hilarious works like "The Irish Ballad," the creative "Oedipus Rex," and his satire of military life in "It Makes a Fellow Proud to Be a Soldier." ...

Frontman and co-founder Chris Gaffney's untimely death in April 2008 ensures that Arizona Motel is the final release from this rootsy country-soul quintet. Unfortunately, the band was just starting to receive national recognition due to constant touring when Gaffney was diagnosed with liver cancer. At least they had time to record a final set and leave on a high note, as this album is a logical continuation of the two previous studio projects and one live disc. Gaffney is in fine form, singing the majority of the songs and infusing them with his heartfelt honesty. Opener "A Lot of Days Are Gone" is particularly affecting, especially in retrospect. On it, guitar-slinging shotgun rider Dave Gonzalez trades lead vocals as Gaff sings "There was always time, but now it's slipped away" for a honky tonk ballad that can also be seen as a moving summary of Gaffney's life. The legendary Dan Penn, who produced both previous studio sets, returns for five (of the 14) tracks, and he wrote two of those, including the closing "Break Free," which features one of Gaffney's most emotional vocals. The rest are credited to the band, which keeps the sound appropriately stripped down yet not raw. The twangy R&B approach is best captured on the ballad "Ordinary Soul," a weeper that hits the sweet spot between genres as effectively as any in the group's catalog. It's highlighted by guest Joe Terry's (Dave Alvin, the Skeletons) piano, a subtle yet essential addition to the majority of these songs. The members get a rare chance to solo on "Light It Again Charlie," the only instrumental and one of the few instances where Gonzalez opens up on guitar. He’s pulling at risk youths out of the streets using the very thing that the young generation gravitate to…Hip Hop. Many of the younger age groups love Hip Hop. They watch their favorite artist’s videos, download music, post the album covers on their web page, wear similar name brand clothes, etc. What happens next if these same youths commit to their faith? What type of music will they now listen to? It’s hard to listen to the same Hip Hop music they once loved especially if the lyrics contradict their beliefs about violence, pornography, promiscuity, and drugs. Joshua Mitchell found himself in the same situation so he wrote, produced, and rapped his own music.
