"WE ARE I" started in 2003 in Lewiston,ME. Jay Staples being from the Maine area quickly hooked up with Ralph Arsenault and Rich Chamberland from the Mass. area to form the band "WE ARE I". After playing some local venues "WE ARE I" quickly gained the attention of some major players in the music buisness. Dave Draiman of Disturbed personally invited "WE ARE I" to play the Boston venue of the Music as a Weapon II Tour in March of 2003. During this time "WE ARE I" was also recording their first full length CD titled "Off the Hook" with acclaimed producer Anthony J. Resta; who's credits include Elton John, Megadeth, Collective Soul and Nuno Bettoncourt. "WE ARE I" has been fortunate enough to play with such bands as: Disturbed, Lacuna Coil, Theory of a Dead Man, Tantric, Shinedown, Chevelle, Taproot, Ra, Apartment 26, Crossfade, dropbox, and many others. Formed in the autumn of 2003 by Reguska and Gregor Samsa, they include folk music from the Balkans and the countries which form the so called “heart of Europe”; songs from the ancient folklore of these people that the musicians of Tabula Rasa filter through all the music that has influenced them throughout their long musical career. The originality of the Tabula Rasa sound lies on the balanced combination of popular songs that have been passed on orally from parents to children which, together with the use of modern rhythmical bases and harmonies that come from the rock, pop and other contemporary styles, manage to show us an ageless music as if it were really trendy.The group is formed by a solo voice, a second voice, guitar, bass (double bass), and drums (percussion). Tabula Rasa’s live is based on a compact sound and a powerful performance, which results in a steady show. Onstage, music is combined with certain theatrical features, especial attention is paid to costume and lightning, that might help the audience connect with the content of the beautiful and moving traditional lyrics. During the season of 2005 Tabula Rasa made their debut by successfully touring several Central European cities like Brno, Ostrava, Klagenfurt, Bratislava, Cracovia, Ljublajana and Prague, where they performed in small clubs and theatres. They were considered by the reviews as a significant band for the future of the world music or ethnic music. The Whistlepigs String Band, based around Minnesota's Twin Cities, bring a combination of hot picking, soulful harmony vocals, bluegrass classics, old time string band oddities, and newly penned originals to our old fashioned single-mic stage show. We have been playing the upper midwest--and Canada--since 2003. We feature Chris Jones on guitar, Joel Olson on banjo, Ross Willits on skinny dawghouse, and Fred Keller on mandolin. We're pleased as punch to have finally released our second CD. Here's a snippet of the liner notes:"Fenceline" may not be The Whistlepigs' first CD, but it feels like our true debut. We knocked out our first CD, "Unjugged," in just a couple of months back in the winter of 2004. We played our first gig together in December 2003, and had our CD produced by the following April. It turned out pretty well. The only problem was that by the time we were done with it, we had figured out who we were as a band and it wasn't the same as the band that recorded the CD.We upgraded our instruments (some of us more than once, right Joel?).We dug up some old songs, wrote new ones, and wore out more than a few hats. We crossed borders and played for audiences across the upper Midwest. And by playing at festivals in Michigan, Wisconsin, South Dakota, the heart of the prairie in Saskatchewan, and all corners of Minnesota, we figured out what being The Whistlepigs was all about.Part of what it's about is playing live with a cool microphone, a warm audience, and having a blast doing it. So when we got around to recording this CD (after two false starts), we set out to record the songs just like we play them on stage. Each song on the disc is a live single take with no overdubs, just like the oldtimers did it. We set up the studio at Kettle River Music (aka Fred's house), turned on the recorder, and played.We drank a fair amount of beer, just the right amount of whiskey, and played some more. Trumpeter Waldron Ricks is a Detroit native. He\'s a contemporary and friend of saxophonist James Carter and studied with Marcus Belgrave. Born in 1968, Waldron came to New York as a teenager and began studying with jazz greats like Barry Harris, Tommy Turrentine, and Wallace Roney. He sat in with Art Blakely, Roy Haynes, Wynton Marsalis, Bobby Watson, Barry Harris, Arthur Taylor, Eddie Henderson, and Roy Hargrove, among others. He has recorded with the Charlie Kohlhase Quintet on the CD \"Good Deeds\" on the Accurate Label; and also with composer Michael Taylor on an as-yet to be released CD. He is a member of the Roxbury Blues Aesthetic, an octet featuring Frank Lacy, which has played at the House of Blues in Cambridge and at the Jazz Gallery in New York City. Below are Waldron\'s notes on his first CD.The music on this CD represents some precious moments in my life when tragedy, love, illness, or loss forced me to slow down and reflect. Bottom Rail on Top. I was inspired to compose a melody for a brave and bodacious black soldier after watching Ken Burns\' documentary series \"The Civil War.\" It tells the story of a former slave who has joined the union army and now marches through the south. His brigade runs across his former master, now a beaten and broken man. As the former slave corrals his master, he says, \"Howdy master! Bottom rail on top now!\" its a soulful proud melody that\'s has its roots in the traditional song form the AABA format. It\'s simplistic from a melodic stand point but structure-wise it is more complex. It starts in 4/4 with very mild harmony then quickly shifts to very dense harmonic progressions and a hidden 2/4 bar proceeded by the last 2 bars of 4/4 in the A section to the bridge and the A section returns. Don\'t ask is a Wayne Shorter tribute. It seems like like i been playing Wayne\'s tune forever, so I wanted to get the feeling of something he might write but from my own pen. When first got to Berklee School of Music in Boston, Wayne\'s tunes were a mystery to me. In my harmony class it was a big deal to try to solve the Wayne puzzle. It was not until I studied with the great theorist George Rusell and learned his Lydian Chromatic concept that I was finally able to understand Wayne\'s writing. I used to ask a lot of questions from a 2-5-1 harmony point of view that didn\'t seemed to work with George\'s concept. One day he told me \"Don\'t ask and just do it\". So i guess this is a tribute to George too. June My Dear is written for my lovely wife June, who has been a friend and well-spring of inspiration for many years now. The Last Dawn represents the morning of the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001. It has a sense of urgency and beauty with a touch of sadness. The musicians ...
