Sing Bing, Sing
Through the Years, Vol. 1: 1950 - 1951 buy CD music Bing Crosby virtually 'invented' the 'Pop' industry, and it's hard to comprehend just how prolific he was during his 50 year career, where most other stars of his generation have long had there entire output available on CD & DVD, there is so much of Bing yet to be released, here are some of his records from 1950/51 that haven't been heard much in recent times, and how refreshing it is to hear them, if for no other reason than just to be reminded how a 'real' singer, sings a 'real' song.

Through the Years, Vol. 1: 1950 - 1951 CD music This extensive collection lives up to its name, featuring 26 tracks recorded in the mid-1950s and previously unreleased on CD. Bing Crosby demonstrates his innate versatility with smoothly accomplished performances of the Latin-flavored "Bando Da Lua" and "Copacabana," the sentimental "Old Soldiers Never Die," and a variety of duets, both with his son, Gary, on "Fatherly Advice," and with fellow showbiz veteran Donald O'Connor on "If There's Anybody Here" and "Back in the Old Routine." An absolute gem of a CD! All 26 of these tracks appear on an official CD release for the first time and the quality is excellent. Here you have the opportunity to hear the crooner's crooner in his mellow period when he was no longer chasing chart successes and before concept-type albums became the norm. Its like a reunion with an old friend warm, nostalgic and somehow reassuring. Remastered from original 78's using cedar 24 bit audio restoration.

Through the Years, Vol. 1: 1950 - 1951 songs In the ten-month period of 1951-1952 covered by this, the third volume in Sepia Records' series of chronological commercial recordings by Bing Crosby (which follows 51 volumes of Jonzo Records' The Chronological Bing Crosby series), Crosby, after 20 years of dominating popular music, finally was falling behind his successors on the pop charts, superseded by a group of sometimes similar-sounding male singers who were a decade (Frankie Laine, Perry Como, Tony Martin) or two (Guy Mitchell, Tony Bennett) his junior. (Meanwhile, he continued to rank in the Top Ten of box office stars and to maintain his weekly radio show.) This fall-off was only beginning to be apparent as he went into the recording studio in June 1951 to cut songs from his latest movie, Here Comes the Groom, including Hoagy Carmichael and Johnny Mercer's "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening," which would just miss the Top Ten and win the Oscar for Best Song. The delightfully nonsensical lyric was set to a Dixieland arrangement, allowing the singer (joined by co-star Jane Wyman and vocal group Three Hits and a Miss) to show off his jazz chops. That was the best of the movie songs, but Crosby typically went on in his later sessions during the year and into 1952 to cut Christmas and Irish material (in one case, "Christmas in Killarney," at the same time); re-tooled French tunes (among them "Domino," which reached the Top 20); new Broadway music; reworked versions of oldies; more movie music for his next picture, Just for You; and even a little country & western (including the Top 20 "Till the End of the World"). Of this typically varied repertoire, his best performances tended to come when a song had a lyric reflecting his own maturity, such as "When the World Was Young" and (from the Alan Jay Lerner/Frederick Loewe musical Paint Your Wagon) "I Still See Elisa." He also clearly enjoyed collaborating with a Dixieland group including Red Nichols and Matty Matlock on a quartet of old songs from the 1910s and '20s, "Sailing Down the Chesapeake Bay," "Ida, Sweet as Apple Cider," "Nobody's Sweetheart," and "It Had to Be You." (The songs were recorded for the radio show, but they were so good that Decca mastered them for commercial release.) Not that he didn't seem to be having fun putting on a brogue in "Two Shillelagh O'Sullivan" or trading faux-South American phrasing with the Andrews Sisters on "I'll Si-Si Ya in Bahia." But as he approached his 49th birthday, Crosby was becoming more of a retrospective singer, which didn't help him on the hit parade. ~ William Ruhlmann Audio Remixer: Robin Cherry. Through the Years, Vol. 1: 1950 - 1951 album for sale In the sixth volume of Sepia Records' chronological series of Bing Crosby's commercial recordings called Through the Years, the series reached a major re-recording project for Crosby, the five-LP box set Bing Crosby: A Musical Autobiography, in which he introduced and sang songs from throughout his career to mark the 20th anniversary of Decca Records in 1954. Through the Years, Vol. 7: 1954 is largely given over to more material from the box set. Crosby, accompanied by Buddy Cole's organ playing in his spoken reminiscences, then sings over Cole's piano trio on evergreens from the '20s and `30s (many of which, in their original versions, were cut for labels other than Decca). These often brief renditions are heard in Crosby's relaxed, resonant later style (he celebrated his 51st birthday in this period, though thinking himself only 50). A few new recordings are interspersed with the Musical Autobiography tracks, notably a couple from Crosby's upcoming film White Christmas with a score by Irving Berlin, "What Can You Do with a General?" and "Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep." As the extensive liner notes by Crosby expert Malcolm MacFarlane point out, Crosby's statements in the introductions are not always entirely factual (he gets some dates wrong, for instance), but they have the jocular tone of his radio shows, and, in fact, this disc comes off more like a radio show than a set of commercial tracks, making it an unusual entry in the chronological series. ~ William Ruhlmann 36 track collection of material from Bing from 1954.
