(1 Customer Review)
Nearly 20 years into his recording career, James McMurtry's JUST US KIDS reveals a man who has become not only one of America's finest roots-rockers, but one of the most penetrating, incisive songsmiths, wielding a lethal wit and a winning way with sociopolitical commentary. His previous album's protest epic "We Can't Make It Here Anymore" set a high bar that's ably matched here by everything from the bluesy state-of-the-union address, "Cheney's Toy," to national anti-anthem "God Bless America." McMurtry's patented deadpan delivery makes every carefully observed narrative connect like a kidney punch.

Entertainment Weekly (p.117) - "It's McMurtry's brilliant character sketches that really shine -- starting with the hilarious, poignant title track..." -- Grade: A- Dirty Linen (p.77) - "JUST US KIDS screams with political tension. McMurtry speaks out against corporate greed and war profiteering and paints a world of drug addicts, murderers, and corrupt politicians." Q (Magazine) (p.140) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[H]e's getting better with age....His band, The Heartless Bastards, could hold their own in the rowdiest barroom." Mojo (Publisher) (p.105) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[H]e's never less than compelling as he takes swipes at the greed of corporations and the conflict in Iraq or conjures up a kind of aural road movie for long-term losers..." Blender (Magazine) (p.77) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Muscularly arranged with bongolated beats, psychedelic swamp guitars, boogie-woogie pine top and snowballing chorus hooks.....You'd be hard-pressed to find a more hard-boiled depiction of hardscrabble '00s life on the edge of recession..." Paste (magazine) (p.57) - "[I]t's the ache of 'Ruby and Carlos' that reveals McMurtry's sensitive brilliance as a chronicler of quiet desperation..." $11.39 In some ways, the story begins with a drum. Sixteen and broke, I was escaping from the disappointment of my world into the worlds I learned to create on the page. I wandered downtown, dragging my feet, and in a store window I saw a drum. I suppose I wanted its voice to help make mine louder. Maybe I wanted it's clear, piercing call to help me shout truth at the streets that had lied to me.I didn't know how to play music well enough to busk, so I learned to sell poetry instead. Surprised, I quickly earned the money to buy the drum. I intended to put the poetry away. It had served its purpose. Instead, the words seemed to attract gravity, having been exposed to the weight of the world, and sank down, into my body. I'd never been hungrier, never more full. The drum came with me when I left. I hitchhiked from ocean to ocean, sitting on street corners exchanging words for food or change. For years I refused to write down a word of it for anyone else. I grieved the loss of the oral tradition and theatrically thought of my words as solemn petals left on the gravestones of the bardic tradition, the indigenous teaching stories, the rocking-chair tales. After realizing that no story is ever passed on well in a single sitting, I resigned to writing out these poems by hand for anyone willing to commit the poem to memory and then, ...
| | Sweet Sorrow On Life And Death CD (2008) (Import)
Just Us Kids music CDs
$18.55 Sweet sorrow was formed in fall of 1996 by Uros Kejzar (guitar), Aljosa Us (bass) and Sebastijan Pregelj (vocals). After a long search and multiple changes the band was joined by Mitja Radic (ex Weeping Willow) on drums. In March of 1997 the band entered a studio for the first time and recorded a demo tape for their own need (practice and developement) that contained five tracks.Soon after that recording they began a search for a second guitarist and for a short time the band was joined by Helmut Franges. In summer 1997 singer Sebastijan and bass player Aljosa decided to find a new guitarist because Uros and Helmut showed a lack of interest due to their other interests in life. The band was preparing to start recording their debut album, with working title "12", in spring of 1997, but due to problems with guitarists the plan did not come to life until winter 1997/98. So instead of two existing guitarists band joined Ziga Hodnik (ex Helpless). In winter 1997 the band joined by the new guitar force Ziga, signed the recording contract with studio "Gong" for their project still named "12". In November 1997 first recordings took place. By this time Sweet Sorrow was joined by Ursa Kavsek who with her high and clear voice upgraded Sebastijan's singing and so added new dimensions to their music. February 1998 they completed first part (four songs) of the recording. During April Sweet Sorrow continued with the second part of their album, which was finished by the end of the year. When the album was finished in November '98, the guys decided to call it Breaking The Silence instead of "12" as it was supposed to be entitled. Soon after the recording was done, the band decided to continue without Ursa who asked to be only on the CD because she has no time for the band, but is prepared to join them on the next recording, which is already in sight. At the same time when the band lost Ursa they gained Pero Caric (ex Helpless, Scaffold) on the second guitar, giving them same depth of the music as it was recorded with only one guitar. At the beginning of winter in 1999 the band parted ways with their long time drummer Mico because of the musical differences. Fortunately they found a replacement in a couple of days in Ales Berlot, who proved to be excelent drummer and a great replacement. After a few concerts and songwriting with Ales on drums, the guys entered the Chinatown Studio on July 16th to record the second CD, that will probably be called "When Life And Death Are One". When the CD was done it was ...
