(6 Customer Reviews)
After more than 40 years of making music, and over 30 as a solo artist, former Spencer Davis Group/Traffic singer Steve Winwood truly seems to have 9 LIVES, sounding as vital as ever on his ninth solo outing. Picking up on the Latin inflections of the preceding ABOUT TIME, percolating congas weave their way through most of the album, adding an insistent pulse. Unsurprisingly, the atmospheric blues-rocker "Dirty City," featuring an Eric Clapton guest appearance, garnered the most attention, but there are plenty of other pleasures here.
The jazzy soprano sax that floats over the congas and acoustic guitar on "Fly," and the floating textures of "Raging Sea," are evocative of Winwood's days in Traffic, while the invigorating organ tabs of "We're All Looking" bear a link to his Spencer Davis Group work. Throughout the album, churning, tension-filled riffs and syncopated Afro-Cuban rhythms provide an urgent undercurrent, proving that this elder statesman is no mere bloated classic-rocker.

Uncut (p.90) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "NINE LIVES revisits the jam-based work of Traffic...and that's good news, because Winwood remains at his most compelling in immediate settings." Q (Magazine) (p.148) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "True to form, his first album in five years is a very musicianly affair..." Steve Winwood 9 Lives Songs 9 Lives Music Review Average Rating: (3.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews bluesy, jazzy ,smooth I love this album.....it reminds me of his old Traffic days; although some songs seem a bit repiticious they are very enjoyable. If you like Winwood in his "pop" days (Arc of a Diver, Highlife) you won't like this album. I did see him in concert last week and it was awesome....he still rocks!

I Dont Understand People...Its Awesome I dont get people puttin this album down. Steve Winwood, since his days in Traffic has been into an eclectic mix of styles, and this is no exception. If you are looking for static rock and roll, then look elsewhere! Not only are the songs great on this album, but Steve truly shines!!! I love it, one of my favorites!!! Oh well, if people dont like it, I guess they cannot appreciate different forms of music....too bad...I highly Reccomend!!!! Submitted by dougee841 (Waterbury, CT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Welcome Back Steve ! After being very disappointed with "About Time", I relished in the fact that Steve was going to put out a knock out album.
I love, LOVE LOVE LOVE this album. It's jazzy and bluesy at the same time.Totally different from his 80's music (which I still love, "Back in the High Life" is my favorite)- I won't be able to see him on tour, but to have this CD in my collection makes up for that.
Welcome back Steve, I missed you!!! Submitted by Carolyn (Sacramento, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$18.55 For his third album Roger Knott travelled to Nashville and employed the talented Clive Gregson to produce this collection of fourteen songs that are firmly rooted in the tradition of âoldâ country music. Itâs quite refreshing actually in these days when pure country music is hardly produced to hear something as fresh and natural as the sounds Knott makes here. There is no trace of alt-country / Americana (or what it has become in recent times) or new-country here. Itâs country music as it used to be and Knott is adept at writing and singing in that genre. Gregson is an obvious choice as producer given his recent work with Nanci Griffith and Pat McInerney and Le Ann Etheridge who also work with Griffith make contributions here too. Itâs something of a country all - stars show really ; apart from the above the wonderful Cathryn Craig helping out on backing vocals, Mike Daly (Whiskeytown) adds his lap steel, Jim Hoke (Emmylou Harris) is there with his flute and saxophone and Thomm Jutz ( Mary Gauthier) plays guitar. With a cast like that you just canât go wrong. But no matter how good the musicians and producer it would be difficult of course to make ...

$16.45 âChandra Calloway does âsouthern soulâ with a Texas twist.âChandra Calloway began singing at the early age of 6 years old at the house parties of her parents, Joe Lee & Ruby Jean Calloway in a small shotgun house in Grand Prairie, TX. Her favorite song was \'The Clean-up Woman\' by Betty Wright. She would put on her mother\'s blouse (which appeared to be a dress) and feather cap and grab the kitchen broom. And, when the room was quiet⊠she would make her appearance! She had a love for singing, even then.Chandra has been on a southern soul tour, for over five years, as a back-up singer for blues artist Mel Waiters. And, she is currently working on her first major, and much anticipated project. She is busy writing and creating new \'girlfriend flava\'. With songs like âShe Was Gonna Give it to Yaâ, and âLook whoâs Jody Now!â, Chandra is destined to set the radio airwaves on fire.Singing professionally, for over 16 years, she has shared the stage with actor/comedian Steve Harvey, Erykah Badu, Ollie Woodson (of Temptations fame), Michael Bolton and even Barry Manilow, just to name a few. As a child, Chandra would sing in any church choir that she visited. Although she appeared to be shy, the stage only excited her to be seen and heard. \"One evening, at choir rehearsal, ...
