The rare coin jingling among the change in your pocket. When I first saw him live, he was performing solo with his guitar. To say that it was a great musical performance is a vast understatement. This was high theatre. Along with a voice that soars like an eagle bound for the distant stars, this man will prove to be one of the important poet/storytellers of our time. His connection with the audience was uncanny. To quote one critic, “The breath of the audience came to a halt, and that’s when I heard my own heart beatingâ€. The act was filled with humor, pathos and the rhythm of a steam locomotive. It went from a Texas style bluster, bigger than life, to an intimate whisper that evoked some third, unseen entity seeming to sew us all together into one pulsating spirit. It was unique. Without a doubt, this gentleman was born to perform.John Andrew’s early mentors were Roy Orbison and Marty Robbins, both storytellers and extraordinary singers. He had also been influenced by, and worked with, some of the great film score composers such as John Barry, not to mention his classical mentors. In his productions, you can hear a unique sonic style. A master lyricist, he starts by complementing his stories with signature phrasing in a dramatic three-octave range. However, as though that were not enough, John Andrew shifts into a seventh gear, using his skills in musical composition to turn each and every song into a miniature movie. He was once dubbed “The King of Country Eastern†due to the broad stroke of his brush. I can understand this point of view. His story lines run from windblown prairies and old jalopies to shooting stars across the cosmic canvas. As Kenny Rogers once said on NBC Television, “Whether or not you like this song [Planet Texas], you have never heard a song like ‘this’ one before. John Andrew Parks is one of the greatest singer/songwriting talents I’ve heard in 20 years.â€Well that should be enough for now, but let me leave you with this one interesting anecdote: When John Andrew was once asked if he was concerned about falling between the cracks, he replied in his Texas drawl, “S**t-Fire! What are you talking about? I shoot for the cracks, that’s where all the flowers grow.â€BIO:John Andrew Parks was born in Dallas, Texas. This album is very deep and personal.It’s strength lies in the fact that it is written about personal experiences, its effect, the despair and the hope, the highs and the lows. So in an underlying way it is conceptual.This album is La Sonya, she follows no other path other than her own, she doesn’t follow any trend or style – it would be so easy to do that, it is not Urban, or Neo Soul, or whatever, it is La Sonya. For that reason she must command respect for laying this down. I’m sure some people will look for the ‘dancefloor’ track, the ‘neo’ track, the ‘hiphop’ track, but that’s not the way this album works – it is La Sonya laying her Soul bare. Crazy yes Beautiful yes.GO- has a Spanish acoustic feel, fast paced with lilting sax, with strong passionate heartfelt vocals, setting the scene. SITTIN\' HERE- is funkier, pondering on the actions taken in the relationship.The art of writing whether it is in fiction, in song or even in comedy, is the ability to give the reader or the listener a picture, an image, a feeling, an empathy, SWEET SURRENDER- ft. Chester Gregory describes perfectly the depths of, the subconscious or unconscious things that one submits to in a relationship.Musically EVERYTHING BUT YOU,- a drivng rock orientated song adds another nuance and continues the storyline. R U Ready ft. Hanifah Watilda musically changes genres to an Urban funky sound as we move into the phase where it’s not all about him, its about me to, culminating in ODE 2 THE PLAYA- telling it like it is.CRAZYBEAUTIFUL- starts of in a Georgio Moroder stylee but actually evolves into a spoken word.TEARS- is interesting in that it is intense and sorrowful, yet the track is light and uplifting. MMM-HMM- is an upbeat track, possibly the most instant and the one that sticks in your head as you hum along to it.DOUBT OF LOVE- summarises the confusion of it all. SOMETIMES- contains lots of influences, as does the whole album really, electro, hip hop, string samples, lots going on.HERE IN NYC- raises the questions, what next, why am I here, do I need to be here, things have changed – La Sonya didn’t we talk about this, just before I left last time ...
