| | Ray LaMontagne Till The Sun Turns Black CD (2006)
Himmelssturmer CD music
$8.99 Ray LaMontagne's second release on RCA, 2006's TILL THE SUN TURNS BLACK, follows many of the cues of his superb debut TROUBLE. He is still a consummate student of classic singer-songwriter rock in the vein of Neil Young, and as in some of Young's most heartfelt work, cinematic string flourishes swell behind introspective lyrics and the thrust of a beautifully understated voice. "Never learned to count my blessings, I choose instead to dwell in my disasters" La Montagne sings on "Empty," and his near whisper invites the listener to do the same. "You Can Bring Me Flowers" rewrites the Stones' classic "Dead Flowers" from the perspective of the jilted lover and "Three More Days" echoes the blue-eyed husky funk of Joe Cocker. LaMontagne is certainly a classicist, but his deft chops reinvigorate the familiar ...

| | Townes Van Zandt Our Mother The Mountain CD (1969) Digipak
Himmelssturmer album
$10.09 One of the best of Van Zandt's early albums. Like all his late-'60s/early-'70s recordings for the Poppy label, it's full of ostensibly incongruous overproduction. As on the early albums of Leonard Cohen and others, though, these light arrangements gain in hindsight, via their earnest elegance and the contrast they provide to the songwriter's dark visions. It sounds as though Townes' handlers were intent on marketing him as some strange combination of Bob Dylan, Glen Campbell and Bob Lind (not an entirely unjustifiable assessment), but the occasionally ominous, visionary songpoetry is too powerful too be pushed under the table by futile stabs at a hit single.
Van Zandt was an artful chronicler of the chronic depression he constantly struggled with, seldom expressed so well in song as on "Kathleen." Van Zandt's laconic country drawl keeps the dark sentiments from sounding overwrought. On "St. John the Gambler" and the Dylanesque "Why She's Acting This Way," he looks outward to describe other, equally star-crossed characters. It's not all gloom though. "Be Here to Love Me" and "Second Lovers Song" show Van Zandt's perennial but little-noted way with a tender love song.

| | Nick Drake Pink Moon CD (1972) Remastered
Himmelssturmer CD music
$8.09 The results of those solo sessions were as harrowing and stark as anything by Robert Johnson or Charley Patton. Enclosed in an inner world of psychological distress, Drake recorded PINK MOON's dispatches from a private hell that was simultaneously terrifying and beautiful. Both the lyrics and the melodic motifs are pared to the bone here, their simplicity making them all the more immediately striking. The most nakedly emotional and disturbing moment is probably "Parasite," a visceral-but-mysterious account of a disconsolate soul roaming through the world in search of succor, with Drake taking the starring role, ultimately offering, "take a look, you may see me in the dirt." This was the end of the road for Nick Drake in more ways than one, but just the beginning for the scores of songwriters ...
