After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque cover to its joyous backing vocals. Laura Wiley, the youngest of four daughters, was born in 1966. She grew up on a twenty-acre farm outside of Bloomington, Indiana, surrounded by many animals. She began playing flute, writing, and drawing around the age of twelve, and has always felt equally compelled to pursue writing, the fine arts and performance. As a high school student, Laura took private flute lessons with graduate students in flute performance at the Indiana University School of Music. She also studied voice, ballet, modern dance, piano, and guitar, and was active in musical theater, marching band, orchestra, and swing choir. After graduating from high school, she attended Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City, and continued to take flute lessons and play in the pit orchestras of musical theater productions while completing a degree in English.After graduation, she decided that city life did not suit her, and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, with the idea of staying for a few months and continuing her creative pursuits. Those three months stretched into almost two decades. She earned a Master’s degree in English from Holy Names University and worked toward a Master’s degree in music (from the same institution) while teaching private flute lessons and literature courses.
