Stand by Your Man: The Best of Tammy Wynette album for sale Originally released by Epic Records in 1970 following the success of her mainstream breakthrough "Stand By Your Man," THE WORLD OF TAMMY WYNETTE is not a conventional greatest hits album. In fact, none of Wynette's hit singles up to this point appeared on this double LP set. Instead, it collects earlier, non-charting singles, album tracks, and the like. At the time, the casual fan who just wanted to hear the hits might have felt a bit cheated, but THE WORLD OF TAMMY WYNETTE is not a cynical cash-in ploy: the material is uniformly fine and Wynette's voice is, as always, magical. Furthermore, this two-LP set quickly became the easiest way for fans to lay hands on some of Wynette's rarities. This single-disc reissue on Wounded Bird Records is a basic, no-frills budget-line release, but it serves a needed function in returning these songs into circulation. The compilation does a fine job of showing why the Mississippi native's tear-jerking twang and sensitivity to the plight of the common man (and woman) earned her the title of "First Lady of Country Music." While there are more comprehensive Wynette career overviews on the market, PLAYLIST is a fine introduction for the uninitiated and includes the original versions of her classics "Stand by your Man" and "D-I-V-O-R-C-E."
