| | Maxwell Now CD (2001)
Naked album
$8.85 "Lifetime" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Rebounding from the slight sophomore lag generated by 1998's EMBRYA, Maxwell's follow-up NOW abandons the neo-soul man's usual M.O. of using a conceptual arc of songs, and instead focuses on individual cuts. Romance remains the main ingredient found in this Brooklyn native's banquet of song, and although he stands firmly in the neo-soul camp of D'Angelo and Erykah, his use of various stylistic nuances once again stamps him as an original item. Twangy country-flavored licks and subtle DJ scratches pop up throughout the lament "Was My Girl," and scratchy rock guitar riffs are sparingly used over the heavy groove of "Temporary Nite." At the centerpiece is a studio version of Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work," a staple of Maxwell's concerts previously showcased on the live 1997 EP UNPLUGGED. Delivered with a crystalline falsetto, delicate strings and subtle pedal steel, it's a daring move worthy of Prince-ly accolades.
Elsewhere, Maxwell easily moves between sly funk (a percolating "Get To Know Ya") and sleek, between-the-sheets posturing (the ...

It opens with the crowd on their feet singing along with "It's A Love Thing", then moves along in perfect transition with "All the Way", and breaking out with the funky, foot-stomping "In the Raw'. Beginning with "I Only Meant to Wet My Feet", they take the audience on a historic journey through the 70's, 80's, 90's and the new millennium with cuts from their 2006 CD, "For Your Ears Only, "Butta" and "Get It On". The Whispers' band, the best and funkiest on the tour circuit, brings the house down on the finale, "Rock Steady", leaving the crowd mesmerized. This rare collectible couldn't have come at a better time in the Whispers' career where the lead vocals of Scotty and Walter Scott still resonate the smooth, silky sounds of the past and dynamic choreography of Nicholas Caldwell and Leaveil Degree is at its best. The street-corner harmony is incomparable to their contemporaries, and today's youth still clamor to imitate their sound. They have received awards from the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, S.F. Bay Area Blues Society, the San ...
| | Vince Gill High Lonesome Sound CD (1996)
Naked music CDs
$6.49 "Worlds Apart" won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. The title track, featuring Alison Krauss & Union Station, won the 1997 Grammy for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals. The title track was also nominated for Best Country Song, and the album was nominated for Best Country Album. "Pretty Little Adriana" won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.
Although Vince Gill is renowned as a country performer, the Oklahoma native actually got his start playing in traditional bluegrass bands. This 1996 album finds Gill getting back in touch with his roots without abandoning his easy-going, pop-tinged style. In fact, although much of the record features a pleasant, down-home vibe, only the title track, which appears in two versions, boasts a decent shot of true bluegrass.
While the first rendition of the tune shines a spotlight of Gill's adept guitar playing, the second take has Alison Krauss and Union Station lending their instrumental expertise to the lilting number. Other highlights of HIGH LONESOME SOUND include the Lyle Lovett-esque "One Dance with You," the gentle "Pretty Little Adriana," and the lovelorn "Worlds Apart." Though Gill's albums were no longer ...
