July 11, 2005 Toni Ann Semple’s Great Spirit (Wakanda) Show By AMAREEFor Legacy Entertainment NEW YORK CITY - Island breezes, peaceful moments, and soothing rhythms reverberated throughout Toni Ann Semple’s show at Triad’s on Saturday, July 9. I had front row seats to one of the most spirited live shows that I’ve seen in a while. Toni’s melodic voice, coupled with her native chants, and breathtaking backup singers transformed the theatre to a new oasis in a dry musical desert. Toni Ann performed for an hour and a half off of her upcoming Cd, “Wakanda”. She was backed by band members that had all kinds of interesting world instruments known to man from the African djembe drums to African Rain Sticks”. Even the audience became participants, when we were asked to sing along on one of the songs, call and response style. The back up singers that accompanied the show gave a solid performance, but the show stopper came when her 13-year old violinist Charles “Chucky” Dubblin, who created his own special moment in the show, performed with Toni on “I really Love you”. It was the young and the younger bridging the gap to make a connection that’s so often lost today.
