Adam Sandler and Emily Watson star. Paul Thomas Anderson follows 1999's MAGNOLIA with the intensely compelling character study PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE. Barry Egan (Adam Sandler) is a quiet, shy, socially awkward man with an office in an out-of-the-way warehouse. He is dedicated to his job as a wholesale toilet plunger salesman, he keeps a nice apartment, and he is obsessed with special offers on grocery store products. Barry's latest fixation is on frequent flier miles included with the purchase of Healthy Choice foods. Barry wears a bright blue suit, though he doesn't know why. With seven outspoken sisters, Barry is constantly being nagged, questioned, and berated. He is challenged to explain the reasons for his actions, and it eventually becomes clear that Barry cannot control his often-violent impulses, a trait which is increasingly problematic. When a beautiful woman, Lena Leonard (Emily Watson), walks into his life with an instinctive attraction to him, a nonjudgmental attitude, and unconditional love, Barry undergoes a powerful transformation.
Anderson's film is a tour-de-force for which he garnered the Best Director award at Cannes 2002. Set primarily in Los Angeles and Utah, he shoots either bleak deserted spaces (apartment building hallways) or lush, exotic paradises (Hawaii). Aiming for a Technicolor look, the blue of Barry's suit in contrast with Lena's solid pinks, reds, and whites, pops off of the screen. Colorful interludes designed by visual artist Jeremy Blake offer hallucinogenic lapses from the action of the film, while the rapid percussive score by Jon Brion keeps the suspense and the emotional exasperation of the film on a constantly high level. Theatrical Release: OCTOBER 11, 2002 Punch-Drunk Love Reviews: "...Anderson remains one of the great visionaries of suburban Southern California..."
-- David Thompson, Sight and Sound "...Quietly sweet, even resonant....The most sincere and artful movie in which Adam Sandler will probably ever appear..."
-- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly "...A must-see Adam Sandler movie..."
-- Jamie Graham, Total Film "...A marvel of pure emotion that links the rage inherent in the films of both Sandler and Anderson. Sandler can act, beautifully. That's that..."
-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "...[A] daring high-wire act....Unexpectedly sweet and pure..."
-- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times "...It proves that Sandler has talent....PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE is never heavy-handed. The jabs it employs are short, carefully placed and dead-center..."

Punch-Drunk Love Movie Review Dark Humor At Its Best. This is, first of all, Adam Sandler's best performance by far. This is a great leap from his usual rutine. The film itself is rare and beautiful, though it did not get the recognition it deserved. Adam Sandler should have been, at least nominated for an academy Award. Submitted by Hillcypress5 (Wallingford, CT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

Punch-Drunk Love review
$12.99 This vignette-laden, nostalgic view of Christmastime in 1940s Indiana follows nine-year-old Ralphie, who desperately wants a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas--and is waging an all-out campaign to convince his reluctant parents that the toy will be safe in his hands. By turns warped and winsome, the comedy follows Ralphie as he prepares for the big day with his rather idiosyncratic family. Based on the novel by humorist Jean Shepherd (who also narrates the film), A CHRISTMAS STORY gained popularity long after its theatrical ...

Punch-Drunk Love film
$7.95 A madcap spoof of the classic Hollywood Western, BLAZING SADDLES is also one of the most gleefully anti-P.C. films ever produced by a major studio. When the sheriff of a small frontier town is killed, convict Bart (Cleavon Little) is appointed the first black sheriff of all-white Rock Ridge by the evil Hedley Lamarr (Harvey Korman), who hopes this will chase the townspeople from their homes. The naive Sheriff Bart soon catches on, realizing from the less than cheery welcome that the townspeople (who all seem to be named Johnson) aren't prepared for a black sheriff and that he was never meant to succeed at all. Enlisting the help of the sensitive town drunk (Gene Wilder), formerly the Waco Kid, Bart embarks on a plan to save Rock Ridge. A scathing spoof that deals with racism, sexism, and bodily functions, BLAZING SADDLES offers a contrast between picture and words that is shocking, subversive, and hilarious. Director Mel Brooks makes two memorable appearances--as both the sleazy governor and a Yiddish-speaking Sioux Indian chief--while Madeline Kahn does a sidesplitting Marlene Dietrich imitation as the town floozy. Featuring fabulous comic turns by Alex Karras and Slim Pickens, BLAZING SADDLES is raunchy, lovable, and uproarious.
The railroad's got to run through the town of Rock Ridge. How do you drive out the townfolk in order to steal their land? Send in the toughest gang you've got...and name a new sheriff who'll last about 24 hours. But that's not really the plot of Blazing Saddles, just the pretext. Once Mel Brooks' lunatic film many call it his best ...

$25.99 Epitomizing the glamour and decadence of 1980s Reagan-era America, DYNASTY was essentially a prime-time soap opera, and was characterized by campy, melodramatic plotlines, as well as Joan Collins's magnetic performance as the conniving Alexis Colby. She is divorced from Blake Carrington (John Forsythe), a fabulously wealthy oil magnate who marries his secretary, Krystle Jennings (Linda Evans), at the show's inception; the jealous Alexis schemes to do everything she can to destroy their union. The rest of the cast includes Blake and Alexis's children--the promiscuous amnesiac Fallon and the sexually ambivalent Steven--as well as resident geologist Matthew Blaisdel and his ...

| | Penelope DVD (2008) Full Frame; Widescreen; Subtitled
Punch-Drunk Love review
$12.55 Like Tim Burton's EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and the TV show PUSHING DAISIES, PENELOPE is a modern fairy tale, complete with candy colors and whimsical cinematography. PENELOPE begins with a generations-old curse by a jilted lover: the next girl in the aristocratic Wilhern family will be born with a pig's snout and ears. Though ages pass, the bad luck finally manifests itself in young Penelope (Christina Ricci) much to the shame of her mother (Christopher Guest favorite Catherine O'Hara). In an effort to break the curse, her mother and father (Richard E. Grant, WITHNAIL AND I) try to bring in a series of blue-blooded suitors. But when they see her face, the men all run screaming. Enter Max (James McAvoy), a down-on-his-luck gambler who connects with Penelope. But when he is exposed as a fraud, the heartbroken girl escapes into the surrounding city. Though she hides her face with a scarf, Penelope gets to experience life outside her family's mansion for the first time.
Pig nose and all, Ricci is adorable as the title character, excellent in alternating between naïveté and independence. Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon succeeds in double duty as both a producer and in a small acting role as Penelope's first friend in the big city. But it's McAvoy, a standout in ATONEMENT and THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND, who threatens to steal hearts. The pair's romance is believable, and it makes the film good viewing for fairy tale fans of all ages. The PG rating should appeal to families, as should the film's message about the importance of inner beauty and self confidence.
Christina Ricci (Speed Racer) stars as Penelope, a lonely heiress who has spent her entire life trying to break a strange family curse that left her with the nose of a pig. When she meets a charming aristocrat (James McAvoy, Atonement) who seems to see beyond her physical appearance, Penelope begins to ...
