Diablo's Dust is the "damned spicy" Indie Rock duo made up of Thom and Sarah Kilts. Their latest lo-fi album "Somewhere Between the Beginning and the End," comes straight out of their garage studio and is their follow up to "Living In Nowhere." This newest album deals with themes of miscommunication, repression, and spiritual longing. The first track, the namesake of the album, asks questions of existence, and the answer is given as a koan or puzzle. The second track, "The Drought Song," tells a story of not having your cries for help heard. On "Male Translata," (literally 'bad translation') again the theme of longing and being misunderstood is explored. "The Good Book," has fun with the notion of the repression of religion and old values on youth -- it challenging those notions with outward defiance -- as jumping on a 'fast train to hell.' "Dawn," explores the opportunity for spiritual awakening, but when the groove fizzles out we are greeted with a sonic punk like anthem. "Dirty Words," speaks again of miscommunication. In the "Lying Lion," the courage to defy and challenge the status quo is lifted up. In "Anybody Listening," a familiar tale is told of people forced to migrate, asking if their cries are being heard. On the "Repressed Man Cometh," the actual mind state of severe repression and its possible consequence(s) are explored. "Let Me Go," is a cry out for freedom and movement within and without. "Won't Make Me Apolitical," asks for defiance against the media and other modes of manipulation to distract us from our rage (again, another form of repression, sometimes forced on us). The album begins to mellow out and get spiritual in tone with "Nothing to Lose at All," which invites us to look at the big picture (a possible suggestion of how to work with our own rage, to never forget to find creative and healthy ways to express it, but keep in mind the larger view as well). Finally the journey quietly ends with "Dearly Departed," a slow jazzy piece lamenting the end of a relationship. Taken as a whole, the album explores these themes with strong songwriting, a multiplicity of music styles and textures all the while maintaining the duos own unique blend and flavor of Americana (bluegrass/punk/alternative rock/jazz).
