| | Soaked Lamb Homemade Blues-2007 CD Soaked Lamb Discography of CDs
The Soaked Lamb is a band of roots music with strong influences of pre-warblues and jazz. The band was formed in 2006 and it¹s composed of sixmembers. Miguel Lima plays reco-reco, that idiophone instrument that soundsgreat due to the friction of a small stick on a piece of bamboo. He alsoplays an actual musical instrument: drums. Vasco Condessa plays every key ofthe piano. Gito is responsible for the lower notes. He¹s able to playupright bass like any other good performer, but with less strings. Both Gitoand Vasco spend their days, when they¹re not playing, working in advertisingas a consuming hobby. Afonso Cruz  a director and illustrator that brewshis own beer  plays guitar, blues harp, ukulele and banjo. He also singsand writes the lyrics and songs. Sometimes he wears a mustache, sometimes hedoesn¹t. The main vocals are the responsibility of Mariana Lima, one of themost feminine members of the band. Her voice brings memories over seventyyears old and lyrics often written in iambic pentameters (or so). TiagoAlbuquerque plays sax, clarinet, guitar and concertina, and because his daysare longer, he also illustrates and directs animation movies. He uses --like all the other members of the band, except for one -- a hat.The first CD was recorded on Sundays, calmly during a whole year. During thesessions a typical Portuguese recipe of soaked lamb was served, hence thename of the band. If you listen carefully, you can actually notice the songsrecorded with a breath scent of cumin, wine and mint. | | Funkadelic Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On CD (1974)
Homemade Blues-2007 music CDs
$21.05 Funkadelic's 1974 release STANDING ON THE VERGE OF GETTING IT ON proved to be a continuation of the more consolidated direction laid down on its predecessor, COSMIC SLOP. But STANDING is the better and stronger album, and easily Funkadelic's most consistent work since the classic MAGGOT BRAIN. Even though the band's members were, at the time, doing double duty in the more commercially oriented Parliament, Funkadelic maintained its complete allegiance here to wildly experimental, rock-influenced music.
The album begins with a lighthearted poem read by two band members, their voices sped up to sound like The Chipmunks. This leads directly into the vicious funk-rock of "Red Hot Mama" and the absolutely raging rocker, "Alice In My Fantasies." The mood calms down briefly for the soulful "I'll Stay" and the playful pop of "Sexy Ways." There are jazzy moments ("Jimmy's Got A Little Bit Of Bitch In Him"), and meditative instrumentals ("Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts"), but the topper is the title track, a manically exuberant jam that still ranks among P-funk's greatest moments.
Expanding back out to a more all-over-the-place lineup -- about 15 or so people this time out -- Funkadelic got a bit more back on track with Standing on the Verge. Admittedly, George Clinton repeats a trick from America Eats Its Young via another re-recording of an Osmium track, namely leadoff cut "Red Hot Mama." However, starting as it does with a hilarious double soliloquy (with the first voice sounding like the happier brother of Sir Nose d'Voidoffunk) and coming across with a fierce new take, it's a good omen for Standing on the Verge as a whole. Eddie Hazel's guitar work in particular is just plain bad-ass; after his absence from Cosmic Slop, it's good to hear him fully back in action with Bernie Worrell, Cordell Mosson, Gary Shider, and the rest. In general, compared to the sometimes too polite Cosmic Slop, Standing on the Verge is a full-bodied, crazy mess in the best possible way, with heavy funk jams that still smoke today while making a lot of supposedly loud and dangerous rock sound anemic. Check out "Alice in My Fantasies" if a good example ...
