Giants Of The Big Band Era songs
$15.69 Too often, CDs that are mostly originals offer more preening than melody. This isn't the case with The Soccerball, a delightful collection that is 76.9-percent original and 100-percent interesting. Bill Mays, Martin Wind, and Matt Wilson have recorded together before, notably on Out in PA, another fine showcase for the trio's compositional talents. Here Peter Weniger brings his soulful, funky, tenor voice to their explorations, which sometimes involve tinkering with familiar themes: the joyous title tune is loosely based on the chord progressions of Nat Adderley's "Work Song," while Weniger's "Garrigue" is an inversion on the changes of "What Is This Thing Called Love?" It's very effective as a bass/horn duo, as is "Pete's Repeat," written by Wind, a lyrical bassist and composer who also contributes the beautiful "Little Prayer," "For My Lady," and "Early Morning Blues," a charming musical reference to his son's bad wake-up moods during his "terrible twos.") "Antonini" is a mountaintop village in Corsica; here, it's a Weninger original where his extended, thoughtful solo opens into a gentle Caribbean/New Orleans roll as the band kicks in. Mays' moody "Kaleidoscope" and the lush "Ballad for Barbara" are notable; there's also a nice, flowing take on "It Never Entered My Mind," and the group has great fun with Bird's "Ah Leu Cha/Scrapple from the Apple." The only odd choice here is Matt Wilson's "Droolin'," which he describes as "sonic experimentation." All told, however, this is a tuneful CD with great energy and considerable finesse in both writing and playing. ~ Judith Schlesinger
The Soccerball is a reunion of three jazz artists who have worked well together before. Martin Wind and Matt Wilson have been part of Bill Mays Trio CDs. Returning the kindness, Mays and Wind have appeared with Wind on one of his albums. Tenor sax player Peter Weniger is the newcomer, although Weniger and Wind were members of the Cologne Concert Band. Weniger brings a set of winning credentials, having nine CDs out as a leader as well as working with a large bag of jazz practitioners. The use of "Vs." in the title implies that this is a contest or confrontation. Not at all. The two main players collaborate on bringing out the best points of a play list dominated by originals by each of the four participants, with three non-original works added to bring ...
| | Mike Mcgill Keep On CD (2006)
Giants Of The Big Band Era album
$12.69 Born and raised on the East Coast, Mike settled in San Diego in 1998. He began writing music in the mid 90's, but didn't start performing until August, 2005. His mellow style is compared to Brushfire Records recording artist Jack Johnson, with obvious influences of Paul Simon, James Taylor, Jim Croce, and a few other '70s pop-folk artists. Mike's early influences were Elvis and The Beatles, but when the '70s disco and '80s "Big Hair" bands became popular, he would still find himself listening to the softer sounds of Paul Simon, James Taylor, Billy Joel, Jim Croce, and The Eagles. A childhood dream of becoming a "rock star" became just that, a dream, as he found himself living the family life at an early age. However, he never stopped loving music and began to teach himself how to play the guitar in the '80s. Although he just played for fun, Mike started writing his own music during the '90s when he began to travel the country as a systems consultant. Now that he has settled in Southern California with a beautiful wife and 4 children, his one time "dream" is in a small way being fulfilled as he finds comfort in performing his own music along with the music of many of the artists he idolizes and is so often compared to. His acoustic surf folk pop rock blend will put a laid back smile on your face. Along with his smooth vocals and harmonies is a mix of acoustic and electric instruments and all original songwriting. Mike's first CD "KEEP ON" was self released in November, 2006. As he continues to perform locally and throughout California, he continues to write and has recently begun recording his second CD, which he hopes to release sometime this year or early 2009. -----------------------------------------------------------"File the new CD from Mike McGill under beach-folk-pop.Not to name names, but if someone were to ask me the question, 'What does it sounds like as far as influences go?' I'd say, 'Equal parts Jimmy Buffet, Jack Johnson, and Don McLean's Ã"Vincent' mode. ' It works in a coffeehouse. It works at a beach bonfire. This 14-track collection of music was primarily written on acoustic guitar and ...
