The main appeal of this soundtrack is, of course, the r&b songs that appear either in their classic original recordings, such as Fontella Bass's "Rescue Me", Dee Dee Sharp's "Gravy", and Etta James' "Roll With Me Henry", or in renditions by "Deloris & The Sisters," aka Whoopi Goldberg and company, with Andrea Robinson doing some key solos. This is a record that likes to mix its musical metaphors, the introduction to "My Guy (My God)" owing a lot less to Mary Wells than it does to the Shangri-Las, which actually makes it into even more of a novelty performance than it already was; the extended finale of "Shout" is almost worth the price of admission -- this all-girl rendition is the first one that this reviewer has heard that could make it into the same rarified league of frenzied ecstacy achieved by the Isley Brothers. The presence of C&C Music Factory's "Just A Touch Of Love" is a little incongruous here on a stylistic level, though it does no violence to the underlying appeal of the CD, which transcends the allure of the movie, ending on Lady Soul's soaring "If My Sister's In Trouble". A Byronic figure from the West Bank scene in Minneapolis during the end of the twentieth century, John C. Van Orman made a mark reflected by the many regional artists who have covered his songs over the years. Boiled in Lead, Bill Hinkley and Judy Larson, Sherry Minnick and the Flash Girls are a diverse lot whose covers reflect the breadth of Van Orman's appeal. His songs are often referential, alluding lyrically and musically to images, themes and motifs from traditional folk song, a realm about which he is very knowledgeable. The instruments with which he accompanies himself - guitar, concertina, pump organ, fiddle and hurdy-gurdy - enhance the vintage quality of the material. Van Orman received Minnesota Music Academy awards for his multi-instrumental prowess as well as for his songwriting skills. Has any band ever stayed as true to a winning formula as AC/DC? Over three-plus decades, the Aussie quintet never embraced contemporary fads (like '80s ZZ Top with dance music or mid '90s Metallica with alternative rock) or deviated from their air-guitar-friendly ways. Eight years after their previous effort (the underrated STIFF UPPER LIP), the band comes through again with BLACK ICE. With Phil Rudd's muscled, midtempo beats and the Young brothers' inimitable fret interplay, the album is loaded with fist raisers. No less than three songs specifically mention "Rock & Roll" in their titles.
Familiarities aside, there are some wild cards on BLACK ICE. Brian Johnson sings almost wistfully on the stand-out "Anything Goes" over Angus's staccato picking (reminiscent of the "Highway to Hell" intro). Johnson also delivers some surprisingly blues-inflected performances on tracks like "Stormy May Day" and the workingman's stomp, "Money Made." "War Machine" finds them storming into protest territory for the first time in their Hall of Fame career.
