Both a cultural artifact and a '70s soul burner, SOUL MESSAGES FROM DIMONA collects 16 tracks recorded by members of a Chicago-based Black Hebrew group following their return to the Holy Land. The collection is packed with slinky '70s jazz-funk and R&B grooves, yet a clear Afrocentrism specific to the Black Hebrew movement runs through nearly every track. As is the case with all Numero Group releases, the disc comes with informative in-depth liner notes, providing essential background information about the origins of the Soul Messengers and other groups, as well as how they played a role in the movement's distinctive form of liberation theology. SOUL MESSAGES FROM DIMONA is both fascinating and prime for the get-down.

This is a fine addition to the long line of early 20th century blues anthologies. Put together by noted guitarist and musicologist John Fahey, this 26-track set shows early Gospel music at its most brutal and intense. It also includes a fascinating essay by Fahey on the intricate relationship between Christian theology and blues and "social" musics in general.

Mates of State are the husband-wife duo of Kori Gardner on keys of various types and Jason Hammel on drums and occasional keys as well. They both sing with innocent gusto, and their charming voices remind one of wonderful indie pop bands like Papas Fritas and Butterglory in the way they intertwine and twist with naïve fervor. They sound like real people singing about real things, and that is kind of exciting. And they don't use guitars of any kind. And you don't miss them either! Team Boo is the band's fullest sounding, most energy-filled record yet. The duo called in Jim Eno of Spoon and John Croslin, who has worked with Spoon also as well as Beulah and the Mates on their first disc, to produce. Together they have concocted a record that leaps out of the speakers with a feeling of manic joy and excitement. Songs like "Fluke," "Ha Ha," and "Gotta Get a Problem" dance with the energy of kids and reel with the flush of first love. Every now and then the record slows down the pace and deals with heavier issues like on the stately "Parachutes (Funeral Song)" or "An Experiment," but even these songs are blessed with killer hooks and Gardner's and Hammel's angelic vocals. Team Boo is a record that will make even the staunchest nonbelievers believe in the power of simply played, honest, and energetic pop music again. Over three decades into a highly successful career as an interpreter of other writers' material, Emmylou Harris beats the odds by releasing her second consecutive album of original compositions. She's had plenty of time to learn from the best, and the lessons gained from digging into the work of writers like Gram Parsons, Leonard Cohen, and Townes Van Zandt can be felt here, even if she can't be expected to equal their mastery. She works again with members of the Spyboy band that helped reinvent Harris's sound on WRECKING BALL, but as on RED DIRT GIRL, the churning, rhythmic feel of the former is underplayed in favor of a gentler, more folkish approach.

The Numero Group is expert at finding, compiling and annotating the output of obscure independent R&B and soul labels, and they've done it again with this collection of tracks recorded between 1969 and 1973 at Clem Price's Columbus, OH-based Harmonic Sounds Studio for his fledgling Prix Records imprint. Price's label released less than a dozen singles in its history, none of which charted or made much more than a regional impact on the world, but thanks to Numero these delightful rarities are now back in circulation. Several of those singles are collected here, along with recently discovered master takes and assorted demos (and at least one extended remix), and the end result is like an alternate history of late-'60s soul. The very first track is truly stunning, a brilliant and exciting song called "Wait a Minute" sung by lost soul man Eddie Ray, and in a fair and just universe, this one would have been a massive hit. Ray's "Glad I Found You" is only a fraction less amazing, and both songs (and performances) qualify for great lost gem status.
