An Eye For An Eye
$17.65 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This strange mix of styles is more effective here than it has ...
| | Judas Priest Concert Classics CD (2009) Reissue
An Eye For An Eye
$11.18 There was a time when British Steel was the hottest, hardest, and most awesome substance on the planet. On Judas Priest "Concert Classics", here it is, in its most appropriate circumstances: live, on stage. Judas Priest re-invented heavy metal. The first band to use the twin-guitar attack, they built on the foundation Black Sabbath had laid and ...
| | Kiss Sonic Boom CDs (2009)
An Eye For An Eye
$16.09 When SONIC BOOM was released, it had been over a decade since the last Kiss studio album, so expectations were understandably high. In addition, the intervening period had seen the band fire two of its founding members for the second time, only to replace them with sidemen wearing Ace Frehley and Peter Criss's iconic makeup. Luckily, the new additions, unlike some of Kiss's "un-masked years" members, have a good feel for classic Kiss. That fact, matched with Paul Stanley's assumption of production duties, makes SONIC BOOM one of the most consistent and thoroughly Kiss-sounding albums since the group's `70s heyday. That said, the New York City unit manages to branch out a bit; alongside very ROCK & ROLL OVER/LOVE GUN-esque tracks such as the Gene Simmons-sung rockers "Yes I Know (Nobody's Perfect)" and "Russian Roulette," sit ambitious pieces such as "Stand," which employs a Motown-influenced chorus melody, sophisticated ...
| | Gorgoroth Quantos Possunt Ad Satanitatem Trahunt CD (2009) (Import) United Kingdom
An Eye For An Eye
$13.79 When founding Gorgoroth guitarist Infernus was sent to jail, his lead singer and bassist, Gaahl and King ov Hell, tried to wrest control of the band from him in court. They lost. When he emerged a free man, Gorgoroth came back with an entirely new lineup featuring Infernus, the band's pre-Gaahl vocalist Pest, bassist Frank Watkins of Obituary (now going by the "black ...

| | Zao Legendary CD (2004)
An Eye For An Eye
$12.39 Heavy Christian rock & roll is no longer anything really new. But Christian metalcore that sounds this dark and angry is pretty unusual. It should be said that the relationship between ZAO's music and the beliefs of its members has always been a bit ambiguous, and indeed there is little on this retrospective collection that would tip off the uninitiated listener as to the group's religious leanings. "Free the Three" seems, in fact, to be a defense of three adolescent Satan-worshippers unjustly accused of a murder; other songs, such as the sonically brutal "Skin Like Winter" (which slyly juxtaposes wall-of-guitar roar and screaming vocals with jaunty handclaps) and the complex, episodic "Ravage Ritual" (which evokes I Against I-era Bad Brains) are harder to get a handle on, lyrically speaking. With this type of music, it doesn't make much sense to criticize it for sounding all the same -- bluegrass all sounds the ...

| | Molding Buddha Tormented By Pol Pot CD (2008)
An Eye For An Eye
$13.15 What do members of Remy Zero, the Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies and Hayseed Dixie have in common? Not much. There’s great music, of course, and great live shows. And the word “great” isn’t an accident or hyperbole – they are all great. Other than that, though, the bands don’t have much in common except this: They are all MOLDING.Members from all those bands (and other bands) show up to play on MOLDING’S bitter and brilliant new record, “Buddha Tormented by Pol Pot”. As the title might suggest, the album represents the struggle and balance between enlightenment and malevolence. Also, the album represents getting drunk and writing caustic songs about ex-girlfriends – that part isn’t really suggested in the title so much. From the personal to the political ...
