Collection Prestige album
$11.19 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster Sara Watkins; ...

Collection Prestige songs
$18.99 A wicked disc of power pop from one of Nashville's monster guitar players. In our opinion, Pat is the best cross-stylist in this town of superlative guitar players. Country, pop, jazz, rock, blues--he is conversant and convincing in all these and more. So much so, in fact, that many do not realize what a fine singer and great songwriter he is. Not only that, but all these cuts were co-written by the man we believe to be the best songwriter in Nashville, Bill DeMain, known to many through his group Swan Dive (see our interview). To stack the deck a little further, add Brad Jones as co-producer at the pop den called Alex the Great, playing killer bass and organ, along with a little Moog and Chamberlin. Nashville's fattest drummer (his sound, I mean) Greg Morrow, rocks so hard, even when he's just got a little side stick going on the snare, and his fills are classic. Jim Hoke, the ultimate swing man and secret studio weapon, appears with a handful of the sharp tools in his bag: flute, bass and chromatic harmonicas, clarinet, autoharp, and saxophone. Pat is a veteran session player, to understate the matter. So the arrangements and the tracks are top shelf, he and B. Jones really know how to put a pop song together in funky, lush, inventive ways that appeal to people ...
| | Walk The Moon Anthem EP CD (2008)
Collection Prestige album
$6.69 WALK THE MOON. The moment this band walked into the studio of producer Erwin Musper (David Bowie, Elton John, Van Halen) an important relationship was forged. "I honestly thought that superb songwriting was a thing of the past," Musper remarked. "These guys proved me wrong." Six months and thirteen tracks later, Walk the Moon is decidedly hungry for the future. Their debut 2008 release "The Anthem EP" consists of four radio-ready tracks from their sessions with Musper at his Bamboo Room Studio in ...

Collection Prestige music CDs
$14.29 UCNX is an audio assault project based out of NJ/Philly (USA) from Douglas Sudia and John Monette focusing mainly on the industrial/electronic/alternative scene. Theirs is a fusion of various styles ranging from classic Electro-Industrial, IDM, Coldwave, Ambient, and Noise into a collection of storming club and experimental tracks with strong vocals, an overall rock sensibility, and strong respect to the past acts of the Wax Trax and Re-Constriction days, without being stuck in them. Doug & John have known each other since the 2nd grade, and although they are a breakthrough new act they have been conspiring on music together for the past decade. What started as a fun hobby evolved into a serious beast: Dedication to their craft, to actual song writing that can still fill the floor to maximum capacity. Fuelled by influence without imitation, ...

| | Johan Agebjorn Mossebo CD (2008)
Collection Prestige CD music
$12.89 The material on Johan Agebjörn's debut album, much of which predates his work with Sally Shapiro, is a good distance from the melodic dance-pop of that project, which was overtly influenced by early-'80s Italo-disco -- although Shapiro's instrumental album closer "Sleep in My Arms" suggested something of what was in store. In a sense this is another sort of throwback, to the even earlier ambient explorations of Brian Eno and Tangerine Dream, but this kind of music arguably has little use for concepts like progress and timeliness, and Mossebo's lush, limpid soundscapes are equally redolent of contemporary artists like Susumu Yokota. Agebjörn himself cites the celebrated early-'90s work of Autechre, Aphex Twin, and Future Sound of London, as well as his fellow Swede Krister Linder (Yeti) and the Norwegian Biosphere, as primary influences, which gives a good idea of what to expect here, though ...
