This interesting early postwar musical combines the musicomedy warhorses of the '40s with the rising Hollywood stars of the '50s, including the lovely Elizabeth Taylor. Choreography by Stanley Donen (who later went on to direct SINGIN' IN THE RAIN) distinguishes a plot about teenage doings before a big dance. A DATE WITH JUDY also includes the songs "It's a Most Unusual Day" and "Cuanto La Gusta" (with Carmen Miranda!).

DVD $9.69  4.3 stars
FROM THE TERRACE is the melodramatic story of one man's relentless pursuit of the American Dream--and, once he's gained his final victory, his eventual rejection of that world. Paul Newman is Alfred Eaton, a man married to old money and on his way up the corporate ladder in a successful Wall Street firm. But Eaton's dissatisfaction with the values that once ruled his life and his illicit love affair with a likeminded young woman turn his world upside down at the moment of his greatest reward. This 1960 drama marks one of the many films in which longtime husband-and-wife acting duo Newman and Joanne Woodward appear opposite each another. Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English

Moody, atmospheric, and bordering on the surreal, this thriller was intended by legendary director John Huston (THE MALTESE FALCON, MOULIN ROUGE) to be an allegory for the repressive American government during the red scare. Though this point was ultimately missed by audiences of all political persuasions, the film nonetheless remains a masterpiece of the suspense genre. Jennifer Jones (TENDER IS THE NIGHT) stars as China Valdez, a Cuban woman whose brother is killed by the authorities; she vows revenge, and joins up with a group of revolutionaries planning to take down the corrupt government. She falls in love with Tony Fenner (John Garfield, GENTLEMEN'S AGREEMENT), an American expat who has also joined the people's revolution, with a plan to tunnel under a cemetery, blow up the car of an official, and then to mount a daring plot to destroy the infrastructure of the government in one fell swoop. The film moves towards its inexorable climax with Huston's characteristically deft storytelling, and both Garfield and Jones turn in excellent performances, with Jones' believable. Cuban accent especially noteworthy. Black & White; Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English

Based on W. Somerset Maugham's highly acclaimed 1944 novel, this is a sprawling, ambitious account of one man's quest for spiritual identity. Over a number of years and continents, we watch as Chicago scion Larry Darrell (Tyrone Power), newly returned from World War I, breaks off his engagement to the lovely but shallow Isabel (Gene Tierney) in order to run off to Paris, and then India, in search of enlightenment. Years pass, the stock market crashes, and the former lovers are reunited. Larry has found the peace he seeks, but the now-married Isabel is still obsessed with him, resulting in great tragedy. Power and Tierney both excel in their leading roles, but the real kudos belong to the supporting players: Clifton Webb, who is excellent as Isabel's fussy uncle, and Anne Baxter, harrowingly raw as the woman Larry tries to rescue from alcoholic ruin. Herbert Marshall plays Maugham, the author and witness to this strange saga of truth, love, and delusion. Director Edmund Goulding (GRAND HOTEL) sets up a luxurious and spacious atmosphere, adorning the lavish sets with bouquets and champagne, while giving the actors plenty of room to move and emote. Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Additional Footage; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack Spanish; English Subtitles; Director's Comments

Two talented redheads cavort through the court of King Louis XV in one of MGM's lightest and frothiest musical concoctions. Adapted from a Cole Porter Broadway show but missing most of its best songs, it's still a treat to see Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra in powdered wigs. Their friendship is a perfect musical-comedy blendship! Lucille Ball goes from NYC torch singer to the dream girl of Red Skelton's wacky, 18th-century-France reverie. Gene Kelly joins the fun!
