England's Futureheads released their first album at the heart of the 2000s post-punk revival, but their jumpy, angular sound owed as much to the pop-geek stylings of XTC as to the edgy austerity of Gang of Four. While the followup was more spacious and expansive, their third album, THIS IS NOT THE WORLD, is a triumphant return to the punchy pace and pop hooks of Futureheads' acclaimed debut. The punky pace and chunky guitars of such tunes as "Think Tonight" and "Broke Up the Time" is consistently contrasted with carefully arranged vocal harmonies, an unerring sense of melody, and an ear for popcraft that bears echoes of everything from the Jam to the above-mentioned XTC.
