| Cheap Trick's End of an Era Album This was 1980 and the last Cheap Trick record with Tom Petersson (before his return in 1988). That being said it contains some of the over-production that was indicative of 80's rock, however, this record has some fantastic tunes and the band plays so hard and confidently that the questionable production doesn't ruin the power of most of the record. | A Complete Opus This is one of those albums that deserves to be lisened to from start to finish (bonus tracks not withstanding). It may not be up to the standard of "The Dark Side of The Moon" or "Tommy" but it is certainly NOT a collection of hit songs, it's a complete work, and a good one at that. By Pete Wagner (Hartford WI USA) This review is for a different format. |
| 2 Stars for the album, 4 for the Bonus Tracks! This is still a hard album for me to like. With George Martin on board as producer I had expected more. By David B. (Seattle, WA, USA, Planet Earth) This review is for a different format. |
| Not standard CT, but powerful..... .... all the same!! I think the average CT fan would not appreciate this album fully because it deviates from yoru classic CT sound.... By draqstripfreaky (Sydney,NSW,Australia) This review is for a different format. |
| I don't hear the noise! I'm not a super or "golden" ear, but listening direct to disc several times on TriPort Headphones, I just can't appreciate any annoying noise during "Day Tripper." Maybe the crowd noise (which was added it turns out to make the track sound live) is what is annoying a previous reviewer. Rainbow Long Live Rock 'n' Roll CD (1978) Top Seller
All Shook Up songs Released in 1978, LONG LIVE was the final Ronnie James Dio-fronted release by Rainbow. Dio would go on to front Black Sabbath, while guitarist Richie Blackmore would reunite with Deep Purple. The album caps off a string of tremendous releases from one of the strongest branches on the heavy-metal family tree.
The title track is a fan favorite and one of the strongest tunes from this era--a heavy rock tune written for arenas. "Lady of the Lake" is a solid number featuring haunting background vocals. "L.A. Connection" features the piano tinglings of keyboardist David Stone. "Gates of Babylon" is a mammoth track featuring the Bavarian String Ensemble, as synthesizer and strings combine for a symphonic big-rock sound. Another standout is "Kill the King," a speedy, full force tune with Mr. Blackmore doing what he does best. Blackmore opens the thunderous "The Shed (Subtle)" with a fluid, effects-laden bluesy solo. "Rainbow Eyes" is a seven-minute epic that features a string quartet, flute, and Dio's euphonic balladry. LONG LIVE, while not the masterwork that is RAINBOW RISING, is a strong album that ends the Dio era on a high note.

Rainbow Down to Earth CD (1979) Top Seller
All Shook Up CD music With the departure of Ronnie James Dio from Rainbow in 1978, guitarist Richie Blackmore could have easily sought a Dio clone and continued the group's recognizable sound. He instead brought Graham Bonnet aboard, a dramatic belter with a completely different style. Blackmore would also recruit former Deep Purple mate Roger Glover on bass and the talented Don Airey on keyboards. The band's sound went from sword-and-sorcery epics to more straight-ahead rock.
"All Night Long" is one of the more popular tunes, a track on which Bonnet's makes his powerful presence immediately felt. Another equally accessible and handclap-filled effort is "Since You've Been Gone." Both songs received FM airplay and charted the commercial course that later albums would take. Don Airey's keyboards provide a haunting intro to "Eyes of the World." "No Time to Lose" is a '50s R&B number with a harder edge. Bonnet sings the blues on the downtrodden "Love's No Friend." Premier skinsman Cozy Powell's shuffle boosts "Lost in Hollywood." DOWN TO EARTH is tight all around, and shows the band's ability to progress. An excellent hard-rock album.

Rockford CD (2006)
All Shook Up buy CD music Largely rudderless and in label limbo since the early 1990s, Cheap Trick showed new signs of life on 2003's SPECIAL ONE, an album that found the long-running rock band signed to Big 3 Records. This relationship clearly served the group well, since '06's ROCKFORD, named after Cheap Trick's Illinois hometown, sees the band proudly returning to its power-pop roots. Tracks such as the hard-rocking "Welcome to the World," the Beatlesque "O Claire," and the jubilant "This Time You Got It" are (no kidding) in the same league as the quartet's classic late-'70s work, with frontman Robin Zander in fine voice, guitarist Rick Nielsen churning out huge riffs, and the rhythm section of bassist Tom Petersson and drummer Bun E. Carlos sounding as tight as ever. Those who had written off Cheap Trick as rock has-beens are proven resoundingly wrong with this delightful and wonderfully assured record.

Latest CD (2009)
All Shook Up album for sale If calling their fifteenth studio album THE LATEST doesn't exactly suggest enthusiasm on the part of Cheap Trick, keep in mind that the band has never shown much enthusiasm for album titles anyway, titling two albums after their band and one after their hometown of Rockford, IL. The THE LATEST follows 2006's ROCKFORD by three years and does indeed offer the latest spin on the band's classic power pop, offering another collection of 13 guitar-heavy pop tunes. After the brief, ominous opener "Sleep Forever," a misleading slice of spacy, hazy, mood rock fades away, Cheap Trick tear into the overlooked Slade gem "When the Lights Are Out," suggesting that THE LATEST will be a high-octane rock-fest, but apart from a handful of other moments--including the raging "Sick Man of Europe" and the "Slow Down" revamp "California Girl"--a lot of the record consists of thick Beatlesque psychedelia, an appealing shift in tactics that makes this something a little bit different than yet another Cheap Trick record.

Heaven Tonight CD (1978)
All Shook Up CD music Heaven Tonight, like In Color, was produced by Tom Werman, but the difference between the two records is substantial. Where In Color often sounded emasculated, Heaven Tonight regains the powerful, arena-ready punch of Cheap Trick, but crosses it with a clever radio-friendly production that relies both on synthesizers and studio effects. Even with the fairly slick production, Cheap Trick sound ferocious throughout the album, slamming heavy metal, power pop, and hard rock together in a humongous sound. "Surrender," the definitive Cheap Trick song, opens the album with a tale about a kid whose parents are hipper than himself, and the remainder of the record is a roller coaster ride, peaking with the sneering "Auf Wiedersehen," the dreamily psychedelic title track, the roaring rocker "On Top of the World," the high-stepping, tongue-in-cheek "How Are You," and the pulverizing cover of the Move's "California Man." Heaven Tonight is the culmination of the group's dizzying early career, summing up the strengths of their first two albums, their live show, and their talent for inverting pop conventions. They were never quite as consistently thrilling on record ever again. [The 2006 Japanese edition includes bonus tracks.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Cheap Trick CD (1977)
All Shook Up buy CD music Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
Cheap Trick's self-titled debut is a '70s rock masterpiece. Although it doesn't contain many renowned songs, it does have superbly underrated compositions and electric performances, and a dark undercurrent is encountered throughout. The melodic hard rock has pop leanings at times, but the album was wisely recorded raw (by Aerosmith producer Jack Douglas), and such disturbing topics as pedophilia, serial murderers, suicide and prostitution are touched upon.
"ELO Kiddies" starts the album off on an anthemic note (the track would be used steadily in concert to get the crowd going), while "Hot Love" and "He's A Whore" showed that the band could easily hold their own with the punk rock crowd. "Mandocello" is an absolutely gorgeous acoustic ballad that had hit single written all over it, while "Daddy Should Have Stayed In High School," "The Ballad of TV Violence" and "Speak Now" are all hard-rocking highlights. Many rightly consider CHEAP TRICK to be the band's finest album (Cheap Trick released a totally different self-titled album in 1997, which should not be confused with this 1977 debut of the same name).
