Following the cue of kid-friendly fellow alt-rock veterans They Might Be Giants, Barenaked Ladies issued their first children's record, SNACKTIME, in 2008. A natural detour for the lighthearted Canadian ensemble, this outing finds Steven Page, Ed Robertson, and the lads giddily indulging their sillier sensibilities, as revealed on playful songs such as "Pollywog in a Bog" and "Humongous Tree." While there is an undercurrent of an educational vibe (see the spaghetti Western-ish counting tune "7, 8, 9"), Barenaked Ladies mostly stick to having fun with more trivial subjects like "The Ninjas" and "Allergies." Though it may not qualify as an "official" BNL album, SNACKTIME doesn't stray too far from the group's easy-going, acoustic-leaning sound, making it of interest to many fans, and, of course, their kids.
Barenaked Ladies: Kevin Hearn (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Ed Robertson , Steven Page (vocals, guitar); Jim Creeggan (vocals, bass guitar); Tyler Stewart (drums, background vocals).

Barenaked Ladies Snacktime! Songs Snacktime! Music Review Average Rating: (3.3 out of 5 stars) BNL Snack Time Nourishes The band's inner-child has never been hard to find in their music for grown-ups. Indulging the child in Snack Time seems perfectly natural. Clever lyrics, great music, and signature BNL "banter" between Ed & Steve. Best song is Ed's take on the ABCs. Fans of Troutfishing in America and They Might Be Giants would like BNL's Snack Time. Submitted by joemcg1260 (Hamburg, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Best Kids Album Our son started listening to this as a newborn and still gets excited when he hears the first few notes of "Pollywog in a Bog." I thought it would be another annoying kids' CD, but found myself singing these songs night and day. I think this CD is much more enjoyable than the They Might Be Giants CDs. Our 5 year old LOVES it! And mom & dad think it's funny, clever & catchy, too. It's everything you like about the Bare Naked Ladies, with lyrics & themes geared for kids. Yet, it's always great when a kids' record doesn't begin to sound like fingernails on a chalk board after listening to it several times. And I think it's safe to say that your kids will want to play this CD several times a day! Submitted by Polly (CT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Juvenile self indulgence. I am a big Ladies fan, but this is a ridiculous album with no redeeming value. Many songs are under 2 minutes long. Lyrics sound like they were written by 5th graders for kindergartners. Save your money or buy Gordon if you don't already have it. Submitted by James (Newport, TN USA) Was This Review Helpful? Snacktime! music CDs
$15.19 As the title intimates, HERE COME THE ABCS is about the alphabet. The album-length conceit spins the 26 letters through the Johns' wacky imagination, anthropomorphizing them ("E Eats Everything"), using them to illustrate geography ("Alphabet of Nations"), and even pitting them against each other ("D & W"). As usual with the Giants, there are games galore ("Can You Find It?"), interesting philosophical questions ("Who Put the Alphabet in Alphabetical Order?"), and a kaleidoscope of musical styles, including Beatlesque psych-pop ("Pictures of Pandas ...

$66.59 Listening to the whole of Plant's catalogue, what impresses most is its variety and range. Beginning with 1982's PICTURES AT ELEVEN and continuing through 2005's MIGHTY REARRANGER, NINE LIVES offers up atmospheric grooves, 1950's-style pop, synth-driven new wave, Middle Eastern drones, straight blues, and a healthy dose of post-Zeppelin thunder. Plant's voice morphs too, from dispassionate popster to banshee wailer to ...

Snacktime! music CDs
$13.85 The first solo record for his new Innerhythmic imprint, the avant-groove Points of Order recording finds the ever-collaborative Bill Laswell inviting stellar musicians into his formidable company for this fall 2001 release. Beginning with a representative Laswellian "period" drum'n'bass spy movie piece, hip-hop leftists Anti-Pop Consortium vocalize over "Staple Nex" and "Broken Toenail Gland," and find an ideal landscape for their acclaimed intellectual spoken words and raps. Lying imbedded among the explorations of trumpet players Graham Haynes and Toshinori Kondo (William Parker, United Future Organization), Beans, Priest, and M. Sayyid's words roll off the tongue with tremendous astuteness lubricating their delivery. ("Now tell the androids what it means to use reason, confuse seasons, abuse needles to make beats, my large intestine is a breakbeat!") But as coyly as they enter, the two songs featuring vocals seep back into instrumental big beat jazz, emulating a kind of enhanced 1968 Miles feel with updated beats and bass that embody all of Laswell's signature deep pocket. Also present on the recording is German-born pianist Karl Berger (Lee Konitz, Sly Dunbar), percussionist Aiyb Dieng (Umar Bin Hassan, Herbie Hancock), and drummer Karsh Kale. Overall this is a cherishable solo recording of tremendous beauty and intelligence, filled with progressive sounds so nurtured they sound like they've been mounting for centuries. ~ Nic Kincaid
Defining prolific artistic significance, Bill Laswell, the legendary composer, bass player, and producer continues to build on a body of work that singles him out as one of the highest achieving musical revolutionaries of the last century. With "vision, integrity and expression" as self-direction and spiritual guide, his tireless productivity as producer and remixer (Miles Davis, Carlos Santana, Fela Kuti, Bob Marley), performer/collaborator (Peter Gabriel, John Zorn, Herbie Hancock, Pharoah Sanders, Tony Williams, Mick Jagger, George Clinton, Buddy ...
