After independently releasing three EP's and one LP, then their debut album for NeedleDrop Records, Somewhere, all to much positive critical response, Chicago's Quiet Kid have delivered their third long-player. It is a disc of considerable standing - an album of purpose.A Bright White Light is just that. It is a collection of inspired and inspiring songs meant to stir the soul and drive the heel. With a band lineup stabilized since 2004, the five individuals in Quiet Kid (Jamie Bachmann, Mark Hughes, John Llewellyn, Chris Meiferdt, and Stevie Weber) have come together into a powerful cohesive unit. While the inception of some of the tunes have clearly come from Bachmann, as in recordings past, the almost Burrito Brothers-esque, 'Mallory', was a Llewellyn-Bachmann effort, and fully half of the record was conceived out of full-band 'jams' in Quiet Kid's rehearsal space. The results are a striking work of a band flexing its musical muscles. Throughout the course of the disc, Quiet Kid continue the Post-Mod tradition with up-tempo, aggressive, R&B infused pop music. It is edgy. It is familiar. It is not, however, simple. From the album's opener, 'The Soundtrack Could Be Better', to its finale, 'Tru-Fi', it is clear the band have an agenda: imparting a message of maintaining independence, embracing action, and instilling hope. The trademark hooks are there, along with the grinding guitars and the driving rhythm section, but there are surprises. After the critical and commercial triumph of 2007's ROLL AWAY, Isle Of Man blues-rock guitarist and singer Davy Knowles and his Back Door Slam returned in 2009 with the Peter Frampton-produced COMING UP FOR AIR. The Frampton connection is especially important since Knowles is stressing the rock side of his musical equation this time out, complete with AOR-worthy old-school songcraft such as the title track and "Tearing Down The Walls." No matter what the genre however, Knowles is without doubt a greatly gifted player; he takes the most smartly constructed solos with a rich, fat tone, very reminiscent of James Gang-era Joe Walsh. And even though bassist Adam Jones and drummer Ross Doyle have pursued a different musical path since this recording, right here these boys are a tight, rocking power trio who show more than a little substance.

Best known for the hit ballad "Natural High," from the band's 1973 album of the same name, Bloodstone has been credited as an important force in black music's transition from the smooth vocal-based R&B of the early `60s to the tougher, dance-oriented urban funk and rock-influenced soul of the `70s. The group's U.K. debut album BLOODSTONE found the unit's sound already fully developed, matching driving, Sly Stone/late-period Jimi Hendrix-style grooves and wah-wah-infused guitar with vocals that alternately tap into James Brown-ish guttural groans and the band's own melodic, doo-wop roots. Interestingly, this combination often ends up sounding like some strange missing link between P-funk and early Three Dog Night.
