| | Raconteurs Consolers Of The Lonely Vinyl LP Record Raconteurs Discography of CDs
From the beginning Jack White insisted that the Raconteurs were a proper band and not just a White Stripes side project. The release of CONSOLERS OF THE LONELY, the second album by the band he co-leads alongside singer-songwriter Brendan Benson, bears out all parties' commitment to the project. From the very first cut (the title track), the varied musical personalities at work here are apparent, as the song moves back and forth between a streamlined, Benson-sung section and a slower, crunchier blues-rocking snatch of patented White work.
That stylistic dynamic plays itself out in less blatant juxtapositions throughout the rest of the album. "You Don't Understand Me" is a classic power-popper replete with twinkling piano and smooth, layered vocal harmonies, while raw garage-rock stomper "Hold Up" leaps out with almost savage ferocity. The most rewarding moments may be the ones where White and Benson collaborate to create a fresh-sounding sonic paradigm, as on "The Switch and the Spur," a trumpet-punctuated epic that sounds more akin to a testosterone-enhanced Decemberists than anything else. Ultimately, White and Benson honor just enough of their respective pasts to ensure a vital future for the Raconteurs.Rolling Stone (p.55) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "CONSOLERS OF THE LONELY comes together like a blissfully stoned conversation between White and Benson about their favorite bands: Led Zeppelin, the Who, Badfinger. Each of them riffs off the other, trading verses and guitar leads on a host of compelling stories..." Rolling Stone (p.96) - Ranked #44 in Rolling Stone's 50 Best Albums Of 2008 -- "[A]n ecstatic, fully integrated live band..." Spin (p.108) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he matchup of White's emotional and musical volatility and Benson's power-pop jones pays off: 'You Don't Understand Me' plays like a long-lost, bitter Badfinger outtake." Spin (p.47) - Ranked #35 in Spin's "40 Best Albums Of 2008" -- "'Hold Up' and 'Salute Your Solution' are blistering rockers served well by an actual rhythm section..." Entertainment Weekly (p.61) - "The Raconteurs hitch country and long-haired funk to a boisterous blooze-rock wagon with nary a nod to subtlety or art-school cool." -- Grade: B+ Uncut (p.99) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he way that it spans dynamic radio rock, affecting urban blues, garage stompers and blatant Who worship renders it rich enough to be remembered..." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.49) - "Loaded with 1970's guitar slinging bravado, it's a red-blooded rock and roll album..." Pitchfork (Website) - "[With] big hooks and bigger guitars, stuffed arrangements, and plenty of instrumental shock and awe....[A]nother loose, comfortable affirmation of what they do well." Consolers Of The Lonely CD music
$21.29 Zevon actually released a record prior to his celebrated self-titled "debut," a record so bad that he took to touring with the Everly Brothers. Whatever he did on the road with them paid off. He returned to recording with bone-rattling West Coast tales of prostitutes, heroin addicts, outlaws and suicidal bar hoppers. Thus, Zevon went, with one record, from playing piano on "Bye Bye Love" to becoming supreme chronicler of L.A.'s underbelly.
Easily his richest and most consistent album, this is arguably the best place for the uninitiated to start. The deranged romp of "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" and the tongue in cheek masochism of "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me" introduced the world at large to the darkly sardonic edge of the singer's muse. From the romanticized "Frank and Jesse James" to the starkly beautiful "Desperadoes Under the Eaves," the album rolls with an insightful (albeit sometimes crazed) sense ...

Consolers Of The Lonely songs
$18.75 His stage fright quickly gives way to a hilarious persona--sort of a stoner Buddy Hackett--who rambles about popping pills at his old bookstore job, out-of-tune Buffalo Springfield gigs, and his lack of "happy songs." These goofball but charming "raps" (six in total, each given their own track) counterbalance the hypnotically emotive performances they bookend. With just an acoustic guitar and his crystalline alto sharp as a lathe, the singer reinvents Buffalo Springfield deep cuts such as "Out of My Mind," "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing," and "Expecting to Fly" and offers a glimpse of future releases like "The Loner" before they were buried in overdubs on NEIL YOUNG. An essential purchase for both fans and newcomers, SUGAR MOUNTAIN provides a deepened portrait of the songwriter as his mercurial but prodigious talent ripened.
This set is another singular installment in the continuing Neil Young Archives Performance Series. On this CD+DVD set, recorded in Ann Arbor, MI, November 9-10, just days before the release of Young's self-titled solo debut, one of the greatest ...

Consolers Of The Lonely album
$19.79 R.E.M.'s full-length debut is a landmark album that set the standard for the next 10 years of indie rock. The Athens quartet combined Byrdsy, folk-rock guitar jangle with obscurantist lyrics and a post-punk compositional sensibility to create a vibrant new sound that would soon be imitated by every high-school poet with a Rickenbacker guitar. R.E.M. was also one ...

Consolers Of The Lonely songs
$16.89 A longtime fixture on the British garage scene as a founding member of the Prisoners and a sideman with Billy Childish in Thee Mighty Caesars and the Buff Medways, Graham Day has finally started trading under his own name with this debut album from his latest project, Graham Day & the Gaolers. With Day on vocals, guitar, keyboards and trumpet, and Buzz Hagstrom and Dan Elektro from the Woggles holding down the rhythm section, Soundtrack to the Daily Grind recalls the headier days of British beat (think the Creation with more energy and less paint) but with a punk sense of outrage and a poet's sense of detail in the lyrics as Day decries contemporary culture on the title track, rails against the father he never knew on "Disown Me," and studies the habitués of a dancehall on Saturday night in "On the Pull." Day's vocals are impassioned and effective and his guitar work is strong, muscular, and roaring throughout; he also does a great job as producer, filling out the songs with instrumental overdubs that add tone and texture without bogging down the rough and ready melodies, and on most of the tracks it's hard to believe that this wasn't all cut live in the studio. Soundtrack to the Daily Grind is just sophisticated and original enough to set itself apart from the work of most '60s obsessives in Europe, but it ...
