Along the way he meets charming oddball Field and they join destinies. A typical road film with winning performances and a dash of social commentary, too.

Heroes video
$5.95 Live Recording
Personnel: Rick Medlocke (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, 12-string guitar); Greg T. Walker (vocals, bass guitar); Jakson "Thunderfoot" Spires (vocals, drums); Pamela Vincent, Cynthia Douglas, Donna Davis (vocals, background vocals); Charlie Hargrett (guitar, acoustic guitar, 12-string guitar); Cub Koda, Shorty Medlocke (harmonica); Pat McCaffrey (keyboards); Henry Weck (percussion). Recording information: Bee Jay Recording Studio, Orlando, FL; Sound Suite Recording Studios, Detroit, MI; Subterrenean Studios, Ann Arbor, MI. After missing the boat with Lynyrd Skynyrd (for whom he played drums early on), guitarist/singer Rick Medlocke formed Blackfoot, arguably the first all-Native American rock group. The band struggled for almost a decade, playing run-of-the-mill Southern rock that they eventually injected with extra volume and attitude before signing with Atco, for whom they recorded their 1979 breakthrough Strikes. Known as a ferocious live unit and probably the heaviest of Southern rock bands (see opener "Road Fever"), Strikes also proved that Blackfoot could write great melodies for the gloomy "Left Turn on a Red Light" and the inspired cover version of Free's "Wishing Well." But the band's biggest hit would come in the form of the seven-minute "Highway Song," a tune that was admittedly very reminiscent of Skynyrd's "Freebird" and that helped drive the album to gold status. Also of note is the harmonica performance of Shorty Medlocke (Rick's dad) on his own blues, "Train Train." ~ Eduardo Rivadavia With ...

| | Gamma 1 CD (1979)
Heroes review
$9.69 Gamma was the group that Ronnie Montrose started after his group Montrose broke up. They released three albums on Elektra records between 1979 and 1982. Gamma 1 hit the Billboard charts in 1979 and rose to #131. Wounded Bird. 2002.
Gamma: Davey Pattison (vocals); Ronnie Montrose (guitar); Jim Alcivar (synthesizer); Alan Fitzgerald (bass); Skip Gillette (percussion). Originally released on Elektra. Personnel: Davey Pattison (vocals); Ronnie Montrose (guitar); Jim Alcivar (keyboards, synthesizer); Skip Gillette (percussion). Recording information: Chateau Records. Photographer: Aaron Rapoport. For Gamma's debut on Elektra, the band picked Mickey Newbury's "Wish I Was" and Hollies/Linda Ronstadt songwriter Clint Ballard Jr.'s "I'm Alive," when maybe Newbury's "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" would have been more appropriate. As far as Ballard's contribution goes, the more familiar "You're No Good" might've worked better than "I'm Alive," creativity not being Gamma's strong suit. With such a cool name as Gamma, the rays that turned Bruce Banner into the Hulk, one might expect Ronnie Montrose to come up with a nice mutated blend of hard-edged Pink Floyd meets Hawkwind. No such luck. The opening track, "Thunder and Lightning," has all the pedestrian elements of a marriage between Foreigner and Bad Company, the mainstream meets the mundane. Ken Scott's production work leaves empty spaces in between the guitar crunch and the keyboard fills, with the work feeling unfinished or rushed. The Hollies' "I'm Alive" is better suited to that band; ...
| | Aventura Kings Of Bachata: Sold Out At Madison Square Garden CDs (2007) With DVD
Heroes DVD
$12.25 This exciting DVD/CD set presents the group's landmark sold-out performance at Madison Square Garden. The DVD commences as Anthony flies from the rafters into the arena, driving thousands of ecstatic fans wild in the true Aventura style. The roster of guest artists, top secret until the night of the performance, includes Miri Ben-Ari, the virtuoso Hip Hop Violinist, Wisin & Yandel, Don Omar, Olga Tanon, El Torito, and Anthony Santos. The program includes a video introduction narrated by Anthony, interviews, fascinating B-roll, and some bonus selections from Altos de Chavon and the 2006 Madison Square Garden performance.
KINGS OF BACHATA: SOLD OUT AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN is a triumphant homecoming for New York City natives Aventura. Formed in the Bronx with the intent of infusing Dominican bachata with the sounds of contemporary American R&B, Aventura released their first album in 1999, and built their following steadily but surely over subsequent releases. This 2007 two-disc live release, which finds the group playing to a sold-out crowd, is an enjoyable sampler of their smooth, tropical flavor (Aventura fall more on the traditional side than the hybrid or R&B side) and charismatic performances. A year after K.O.B. Live (2006) was a commercial blockbuster, Aventura released another double-disc live album, Kings of Bachata: Sold Out at Madison Square Garden, that likewise features them performing their bounty of hits while a stadium full of girls scream in the background. Documenting their sold-out performance at Madison Square Garden in the group's hometown of New York City on September 1, 2007, the album finds Aventura joined on-stage ...
| | Lyfe Jennings Lyfe Change CD (2008) Sba1
Heroes movie DVD
$10.09 The third effort from contemporary soulster Lyfe Jennings fits the mold of his previous releases in its mixture of thoughtful, introspective themes and sleek, urban contemporary sounds. Jennings recruits friends the Underdogs and Wyclef Jean (who collaborates on the Bob Marley-influenced "Wild, Wild, Wild") to craft the general vibe of LYFE CHANCE, but it's his show through and through. There are a few unusual instances of Jennings upping the tempo, as on the catchy jam "Old School" (which features a guest appearance from Snoop Dogg), but for the most part the disc keeps it low and in the cut, with standouts like "Keep on Dreaming" and "Never Never Land" riding sweet mid-to-downtempo grooves. Consistent throughout is Jennings' lilting, soulful croon and reflective narration, making LYFE CHANCE one of the artist's strongest discs. Lyfe Jennings' third album doesn't involve all that much change, at least not on the surface. He does do a little less of the heavy lifting, seeking out some assistance from the Underdogs, Wyclef Jean, and a couple other associates from his Jesus Swings production house, but Lyfe Change is still very much a Lyfe Jennings album -- it's not as if his label directed him away from what came natural throughout 2004's Lyfe 268-192 and 2006's The Phoenix. He continues to spin real-life tales and handle serious issues, as on the skeletal but seductive "It's Real" (where his attraction to a woman shifts from heated to cautionary), the Bob Marley-referencing "Wild, Wild, Wild" (the Wyclef collaboration, about losing your way as the exchange for the seeking of fame), and "Never Never Land" ...
