The album has an overall militaristic feel that Killing Joke shed in later years. Notable cuts include the drum-machine driven "Butcher," and "Follow the Leader" which owes as much to early techno as it does to punk rock--an interesting combination. WHAT'S THIS FOR...! is a crucial step in Killing Joke's evolution from anarchist punk-rockers to sophisticated, genre-busting musical propagandists.
If not quite as remarkable as the band's gripping self-titled debut, What's THIS For...! showed that Killing Joke could maintain their frenetic, doom-wracked intensity while experimenting with their already strongly established style. Jaz Coleman's vocals go through even more treatments and tweaks than before, chorus shout-alongs swathed in deep echoes, hidden behind Geordie Walker's punishing riffs and the steroid-driven rhythm section. Big Paul Ferguson in particular lays down some absolutely skull-crushing drum slams and Youth is no less intense at most parts, and often they rather than Coleman or Geordie dictate the song, as the lengthy death-groove of "Madness" makes perfectly clear. Elsewhere Geordie shows a calmer (comparatively) side, soloing on songs like "Butcher" making common cause with the guitar work of Bernard Sumner in Joy Division days -- indeed, the song as a whole could almost be a tribute to that band, and one of the better ones at that. The playing around with supposed genre boundaries doesn't hurt either -- the beatbox/synth loop pulse of "Follow the Leaders," crossed with the more brusque blasts from the core band, suggests its eventual path in later years, while "Tension" lets the slithering funk heart of the band burst forth even more strongly. (The drums and opening riffs themselves almost sound like a parody of the Knack's "My Sharona.") "Unspeakable" is arguably the hidden highlight of the album, Coleman's heavily flanged, distorted singing sliding down a slowly descending chord pattern that suggests an early glam band gone martial and paranoid, Ferguson all over his set like four people at once. The debts of later bands toward Killing Joke are even clearer than ever, whether it's the fact a group named themselves after the opening track, "The Fall of Because," or that late-'80s Ministry so effectively cloned the whole style on songs like "Burning Inside." [A Limited Edition was issued in 2008.] ~ Ned Raggett
Limited edition 2008 double 180gm vinyl LP pressing of the sophomore album from the English Post-Punkers. This second and by far the most experimental Killing Joke album is a stunning journey into the dark from this wonderfully unafraid band. Killing Joke were formed in 1979. Founding members Jeremy "Jaz" Coleman (vocal, keyboards and arrangements) and Geordie Walker (guitars) have been the only constant members. Original bassist Youth (featured on this album) has gone on to become a successful producer and artist in his own right. Let Them Eat Vinyl.
Socially conscious lyrics and aggressive, wardance-like songs dot WHAT'S THIS FOR...!, another essential piece in the Killing Joke puzzle. This sophomore effort finds the band experimenting more with non-traditional song-structures; employing atonality and irregular syncopation, it skillfully uses its music to supplement its message.
Killing Joke includes: Jaz Coleman (vocals, keyboards); Geordie (guitar); Paul Raven (bass).

What's This For...! album
$11.18 With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern R&B, and the vague Euro strains of new millennium teen pop. All this makes For Your Entertainment very, very modern in a way few mainstream pop albums are in 2009, whether they're products of the American Idol/19 machine or not: Max Martin, ...

What's This For...! songs
$22.09 With the release of GET LUCKY, Mark Knopfler has made as many solo studio albums as he made group studio albums with Dire Straits, which itself may be a signal that it's time to stop comparing his two careers and simply accept them as separate entities. Of course, since Knopfler was the lead singer, chief instrumentalist, and songwriter for Dire Straits, there are obvious similarities, even if he has taken a deliberately different path as a solo artist. Basically, he's a lot quieter. "Border Reiver," the first song here, begins with a pennywhistle and a piano, then strings join in. Soon enough, Knopfler's distinctive conversational baritone begins calmly intoning lyrics, and eventually there are examples of ...

| | Nico All Tomorrow's Parties Vinyl LP (2003)
What's This For...! music CDs
$16.89 Examining Nico's solo career is at once a fascinating and frustrating experience; while she made a handful of truly compelling albums following her short tenure with the Velvet Underground, after 1974's The End most of her discography is a puzzling morass of dodgy live albums, half-baked studio sessions, and cobbled-together collections. All Tomorrow's Parties is a patchwork effort that falls squarely into the third category; the bulk of the album is drawn from an April 11, 1986, concert in Tokyo that has already seen release on the imaginatively titled Live in Tokyo. As such things go, it captures Nico in strong form; her voice is in good shape, her performance is committed, and her band sounds simpatico, and though this isn't the best place to hear her sing either "Femme Fatale" or "Janitor of Lunacy," it certainly stacks up as one of the better live recordings of Nico from the 1980s. Tacked on for no easily explained reason are four studio tracks -- both sides of a single of "Vegas" and "Saeta," and two versions of "All Tomorrow's Parties" recorded with a group that is obviously not the Velvet Underground (but trying desperately hard to fool listeners), with Nico's vocals apparently grafted on from her a cappella ...

$21.69 You'd half expect this supergroup's self-titled debut album -- recorded at Wally Heider's recording studios in L.A. with producer Bill Halverson (Crosby, Stills & Nash, Freddie King) -- to have made a bigger splash. Unfortunately, after landing in record store bins in the spring of 1970, Blue Mountain Eagle failed to generate much interest among ...
