| | Dino: The Essential Dean Martin CD (2004)
This Is Living
$10.89 Nearly a decade after Dean Martin's death, the crooner's fans were finally given the definitive Dino collection. While there was already a two-disc summation of Martin's Capitol recordings, as well as several compilations of his Reprise material, the single-disc, 30-track DINO: THE ESSENTIAL DEAN MARTIN contains a generous selection of the best of his work, culling from both labels' vaults. Steubenville, Ohio's favorite son became a singing star in the 1950s, mostly by virtue of his smooth, easy charm, apparent both in his vocal style and his public image. That charm is crystallized here--the South American lilt of "Sway;" the spare, countryish "Memories Are Made of This" (not insignificantly covered later by Johnny Cash); the laissez-faire swing of "Ain't ...

| | John Mastroianni Live At The Silvermine CD (1997)
This Is Living
$13.25 The eight tunes on this CD (five of them Mastroianni originals) were recorded live over the course of two nights at a colonial-style inn called the Silvermine in Norwalk, CT, and the intimate setting is reflected in the music. Mastroianni's compositions tend to be a little bit on the abstruse side, but his playing is warm and inviting; so is that of his excellent sidemen, who include guitarist Steve Brien and the great bass-and-drums duo of Harvie Swartz and Terry Clarke. The focus is on mid-tempo, modal-sounding numbers and gentle ballads, but when the band kicks up the tempo on "It's You or No One" (the sole standard on the program) and the barnburning "Nasty Masty," the result is really thrilling; the interplay between bass and guitar on the latter is especially exciting. Mastroianni exhibits a clear debt to Phil Woods, but it's an influence that has been digested and absorbed into his own fairly personal approach, and his ability to make compositions ...
| | Raw Deluxe Back By Popular Demand CD (2005)
This Is Living
$14.79 Back By Popular Demand is the second release by this Bay Area outfit. During the recording of this album MC's Lexxx Luthor, CB, and Mic Blake, all alumni of the prolific jazz/hip-hop group Alphabet Soup, joined the mix. With this album you see the variety of flavors that this group can deliver. From the three instrumental funk tracks, to the funk/hip-hop track "Suppose To Be", featuring the dynamic vocals of Zoe Ellis, to the raga-style-funk track "Turn Out The Lights", with Lucky. The band drops a mix of styles true to the cultural melting-pot that is the Bay Area. Since 1998, Raw Deluxe has performed their high-energy show for audiences both nationally and internationally. The group's exciting live act stems from their well-crafted songs and strong improvisational skillsIn 2000, RD was voted Best Jazz Band by the SF Bay Guardian's "Best of the Bay". The group was also noted as "one of the best original acts currently in the Bay Area" on citysearch.com, where they were nominated for 2001 Best Music Act, along side artists such as Green Day, Boz Scaggs, and Vinyl. The group was also nominated for the 2002 SF Weekly Music Awards, "Best Soul / Blues / Funk" categoryThe band is comprised of Chris_Spano - drums, Chris_Arenas - bass, Matt_Fleming - electric piano/organ, Tony_Jurado - saxophone, and MC's Lexxx Luthor, Mic Blake and CB of the Alphabet Soup Crew. The group got their start playing the Bay Area's acid-jazz and hip-hop circuit throughout the late nineties, performing at Toph One's The Funkside and Mr. Brown's Elephunk and Double Trouble parties. Since then they have come from the underground to playing larger events with acts such as Digital Underground, Olu Dara, and The Breakestra. In July 2001, the group released the critically acclaimed EP "Back to the Jungle" on the Reel Deal Music label. XLR8R magazine noted the CD as "Killer jazz-funk from this San Francisco outfit, complete with horns, wailing keys and tight rhythm. They've been quietly winning loyal fans for the past few years, and with these six original tracks it's easy to see why. Check 'em out." You can also find the breakout single "Get Some" featured on the Subkoncious ...

This Is Living
$14.49 He has a few other discs out there, but GOIN' ALL OUT is the Blue Note debut of jazz saxophonist Eric Darius. While his engaging style fits well into the smooth-jazz radio format, Darius's approach on this disc ups the ante considerably. ALL OUT features elements of gospel, old-school R&B, hip-hop, and even electronica lovingly folded into the mix. Darius has a big, gorgeous tone on his horns (he switches between alto and tenor sax), evoking past R&B- and blues-impacted sax masters such as Gene Ammons ...
