Yellowjackets were once considered pioneers of the smooth jazz sound, the mellow approach to fusion. To a degree, that's true. But since the early `90s, Yellowjackets has favored a slightly more assertive approach, inspired the grandparents of fusion--Miles Davis, Weather Report, the electric side of Chick Corea. Saxophonist Bob Mintzer can be mellow or fiery, and, speaking of fire, the Jackets are joined here by fusion guitar ace Mike Stern. With its creative balance of electric and acoustic instrumentation, fusion, bebop and a touch of blues, LIFECYCLE proves that Yellowjackets aren't merely a groovy background-music combo.

| | Pat Metheny Way Up CD (2005)
Lifecycle CD music
$15.65 Guitarist Pat Metheny has been working with long song forms since his career began in the 1970s. However, his 2005 release, THE WAY UP, takes the extended form to the next level. One composition split into four sections, this album just may be Metheny's most ambitious work to date.
Collaborating with longtime associates Lyle Mays (keyboards), Steve Rodby (bass), and a host of newer PMG members, ...
| | Yellowjackets Altered State CD (2005)
Lifecycle music CDs
$15.65 The most adventurous quartet in contemporary jazz has met its visual match in Peter Max, the legendary pop artist who, as it turns out, is a huge fan of the band. Russell Ferrante and company could probably feel at home naming any of their innovative, loose-spirited albums after one of Max's paintings, but Altered State definitely fits the vibe here -- which is all odd meters, emotionally provocative melodic lines, and unexpected harmonies. Max, in turn, took a few preliminary tracks and was inspired to create the cool, splotchy cover art. The hourlong musical affair won't cause any permanent mental and emotional departures, but there are a lot of odd and spirited surprises along the way. "Suite 15," featuring the funky interplay of Bob Mintzer's aggressive sax and Ferrante's ...

Lifecycle music CDs
$8.55 From the Blog Of Jeremy Gloff:January '97 found me in bad shape. I was in Atlanta without transportation. I didn't enjoy my job at WalMart. I struggled with establishing friendships. I was briefly interested in a boy but the relationship soured quickly. This further compromised my stability. A late night mental meltdown led me to the decision that it was best I return to New York. Thankfully a friend of mine had driven down to vacation and she let me ride back North with her. Upon returning to Fredonia I reconciled with my family and stayed with them a bit. Then I stayed in Buffalo. Then Pittsburgh. Then Atlanta again. Then Pittsburgh. Eventually I settled in Fredonia, once again sleeping on the floor ...
