The sophomore release from bassist, vocalist, and composer Esperanza Spalding blends Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and post-bop jazz with a keen ear for ballads and pop. At times, ESPERANZA sounds like world music, at other times like female vocal jazz from the 1950s, and other times like smooth, Norah Jones-ish contemporary pop. Yet instead of making for a scattershot collection, these flavors are unified beautifully in Spalding's remarkable musicianship, writing, and singing. A refreshing listen from start to finish, ESPERANZA goes down smooth, but feels substantive.Down Beat (p.69) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Spalding sings like a cross between Minnie Riperton and Flora Purim, writes in a style recalling Milton Nascimento, and seems indebted to the rich melodies of Stevie Wonder. Her sons sing when she lets the rhythms fly high..." JazzTimes (p.111) - "Spalding's voice slips through each of her intricately crafted arrangements as if imbued with the spirit of Flora Purim." Vibe (p.62) - "Spalding has fashioned something cohesive and diverse, calling upon a strong coalition of musicians and the depths of her own skill." Esperanza Spalding Esperanza Songs Esperanza Music Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) Esperanza's 2nd CD is Fabulous! Four and a half Stars!! Young jazz star Esperanza Spalding is amazing: she can sing, she can play a blazing upright double bass, and she is an effective, engaging composer. Featuring an impressive group of support musicians like guitarist Nino Josele, sax master Donald Harrison, the fiery piano of Leo Genovese, the impressive trumpet of Ambrose Akinmusire, percussion masters Jamey Haddad and "El Negro" Hernandez, Otis Brown's protean drumming, and others, this CD is a winner. Ms Spalding sings in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Wonderful!!! Submitted by Raidrone (Florida Keys) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 3 of 3 found this helpful.

Good album. The album is very musical with a wide range of sounds. The fact that it has such a wide range of sounds makes it hard to get that total album vibe. Submitted by reavesda (Detroit, MI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Esperanza
$13.45 This posthumous anthology is the perfect introduction to the astonishing vocal talents of Eva Cassidy, a young, relatively unknown singer who died of cancer at 33, just as her career was beginning to gain steam. Cassidy, a native of Washington D.C., gained local favor with her pure, straightforward tone and her lovely, tasteful interpretations of everything from standards to gospel to contemporary pop.
SONGBIRD is a definitive best-of selection that picks from Cassidy's studio albums and shows the depth and breadth of her skills. SONGBIRD's perfection as a compilation is in its song choice, which covers Cassidy's takes on gospel ("Oh, Had I A Golden Thread"), soul (Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready"), pop (Sting's "Fields of Gold"), and well-known standards ("Over the Rainbow"). ...
| | Muddy Waters Folk Singer CD (1964) Remastered
Esperanza
$8.49 Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24-karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box.
"You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER hark back to those days. He's accompanied sparsely by Willie Dixon, drummer Clifton James and a young Buddy Guy, who provide a stark, deliberate backdrop for Muddy's rich vocal and expressive bottleneck guitar work. The richness of Muddy's baritone is showcased effectively here, with more room than usual for his voice to resonate.
The low-key setting allows Muddy to explore a fuller dynamic range as well. From the romantic yearning of "Long Distance Call" to the fatalism of the chain gang song "My Captain," Muddy's voice expresses entire worlds of emotion with only ...
