| | Enya And Winter Came... CD (2008)
Sin Limites album
$11.85 Unlike Enya's 2006 EP, CHRISTMAS SECRETS, with which it shares no tracks, AND WINTER CAME is not a traditional Christmas album. It's more impressionistic than most, placing a handful of Christmas songs such as "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" in the midst of a shimmering soundscape of keyboards, strings, and Enya's trademark overdubbed vocal chorales. The mostly original material does an exceptional job ...
| | Stan Getz Getz/Gilberto (1963)
Sin Limites CD music
$15.05 This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
The record that started the bossa nova craze of the mid-'60s, GETZ-GILBERTO is a justly recognized classic. The disc's success is attributable to its spectacular personnel: the man who basically invented bossa nova, Antonio Carlos Jobim; the man who defined and perfected the genre, Joao Gilberto; his charmingly waifish-sounding wife, Astrud Gilberto; and American tenor saxophonist extraordinaire Stan Getz. Jobim plays guitar and piano; Getz provides remarkably lyrical, complementary lead lines, and Joao Gilberto plays and sings in Portuguese with the most understated, romantic, and artful vocal delivery imaginable. It's a hard combination to beat.
Opening track "The Girl From Ipanema," a breezy, infectious Jobim composition with vocals by both Joao and Astrud, became one of the biggest (and most recognizable) hits of the era, and the single most popular Brazilian tune in America. The exquisite shuffle "Desafinado," the Joao-Astrud duet "Corcovado," and the eminently grooving "So Danco Samba" have gone on to become standards of both bossa nova and jazz, and the versions here are definitive. ...

| | Freddy Fender Before The Next Teardrop Falls CD (1975)
Sin Limites album
$6.45 Textbook blend of Tex-Mex and country, spiced by Fender's immortal hit. ~ Ron Wynn
Before the next teardrop falls, one thing is for sure: Another Freddy Fender collection will be issued with the same title as this one, the original blockbuster album that made him a household name among an audience that extended well beyond country fans, at least for a few years. "Before the Next Teardrop Falls" was such a smash hit that record companies cashing in on Fender's popularity just had to use it on their releases. The concept of calling these packages "greatest hits" never occurred to anybody, apparently. Thus the consumer might think they are buying this particular album when they are not, so careful. Although the later "Before" albums are perfectly good records, like most Fender productions, he really struck a tasty groove on the original 1974 session, done with a small band of his usual bandmates and studio accomplices. Obviously the same players are featured on all the tracks, creating great continuity and a pleasing flow to the light country-rock sound. Of course, there is the surprise appearance of a harpsichord but that hardly shakes the Tex-Mex foundation. The group's success was not just limited to the album's big hit. Even better tracks are here, such as Fender's own hilarious song "I Love My Rancho Grande," a few covers of great country songs such as ...

| | Bone Gnawer Feast Of The Flesh CD (2009)
Sin Limites album
$10.95 Song titles often let you know what type of music you're getting. The titles on Bone Gnawer's FEAST OF FLESH include "Cannibal Cookout," "Hammer to the Skull," "Hatchet Face," "The Lucky Ones Die First," and "Make You Die Slow"; in other words, Bone Gnawer favors unapologetically stereotypical death metal song titles -- specifically, the type of song titles that are plentiful in the grindcore school of death metal. But while FEAST OF FLESH is, in fact, death metal, it isn't grindcore per se. Bone Gnawer, a part-Swedish, part-American foursome that includes singer Kam Lee (of Massacre fame) and bassist Rogga Johansson (known for his work with Paganizer), thrive on the over-the-top horror/gore imagery that grindcore favorites like Cannibal Corpse and Carcass are known for. But musically, Bone Gnawer offer a death metal/thrash approach (with slight hints of black metal on occasion) that isn't quite as extreme as grindcore. Lee's Cookie Monster vocals are fairly easy to understand, and the tunes are -- in their brutal, vicious way -- hooky and infectious. They are also quite ironic. Like Cannibal Corpse and Carcass (or for that matter, ...
