Formed in 1990, Revolutionary Snake Ensemble is an experimental brass band with influences ranging from free jazz to New Orleans second line to contemporary funk. This is their second album. Revolutionary Snake Ensemble is a funk & street beat brass band, playing music that comes directly from New Orleans combined with other modern improvised celebratory musics. They capture the fun of a street parade band while also expanding its stylistic range. Party music that challenges the listener. This is the only CD ever released to include songs written by both Billy Idol & Ornette Coleman!
Ken Field's Revolutionary Snake Ensemble: Ken Field (whistle, alto saxophone, clappers, percussion); Jon Fraser (trumpet); Lennie Peterson (trombone); Kimon Kirk (acoustic bass); Phil Neighbors (electric bass, drum, percussion); Erik Paull (drums, percussion). Personnel: Andrew Hickman (tenor saxophone). Mixing the avant-garde edge of the Art Ensemble of Chicago with the gutbucket groove of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the crossover appeal of the Jazz Passengers, the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble whips up a steamy stew of all-American sounds on FORKED TONGUE. They lend a New Orleans-meets-Knitting Factory flavor to everything from the folk tune "Little Liza Jane" to Billy Idol's "White Wedding," with unsurprisingly eclectic results.
The Wire (p.73) - "[B]y the time you get to 'Minor Vee' and 'Under The Skin', both written by saxophonist/leader Ken Field, you're a voodoo convert." JazzTimes (p.79) - "Field's arrangements of traditional fare such as 'Just a Closer Walk,' 'Give Me Jesus' and 'Down by the Riverside' are eminently satisfying and invigorating." Dirty Linen (p.49) - "RSE's album starts with the slinkiest and sassiest version of the gospel chestnut 'Just a Closer Walk' ever heard..." Signal To Noise (magazine) (p.70) - "[T]he septet provides rousing good fun on twelve slices of boisterous horn interplay and rock-solid funk grooves..." Forked Tongue album
$14.59 If Otomo Yoshihide can interpret Eric Dolphy and Marc Ribot can do Albert Ayler, then why not Nels Cline doing Andrew Hill -- who is still alive and creating marvelously, with his recordings in the current century clear evidence of this. As Cline describes his approach in the liner notes, this most certainly is not a tribute record or an attempt to completely re-create Hill's music. The transcriptions came from recordings rather than notated sources. He also writes that the bandmembers -- like many of Hill's ensembles -- do not play on changes (in "Dedication" and the medley "Yokada Yokada/The Rumproller" -- a bit of humor tossed in -- they do, but nowhere else). The band includes Cline on guitars, Ben Goldberg on clarinets, Bobby Bradford on cornet, Andrea ...
