Anatomy Lesson album
$21.00 Comprised of 18 tracks culled from the singer/composer's first three decades, The Very Best of Enya was pieced together by the artist herself, along with longtime collaborators Nicky and Roma Ryan. Luckily, the trio seems enamored by most of the same songs that the general public is, resulting in one of those rare "greatest-hits" collections that goes deep without depriving the listener of the essentials. With tunes like "Orinoco Flow," "Caribbean Blue," and "Book of Days" in the pot and out of the way, it's easier to appreciate hidden gems like "Cursum Perficio," "Boadicea," "Trains and Winter Rains," and "Anywhere Is." Also notable is the inclusion of "May It Be" and a previously unreleased version of "Aníron (I Desire)," both of which originally appeared on the soundtrack for the first chapter of Peter Jackson's beloved Lord of the Rings trilogy. ~ James Christopher Monger

| | Slayer World Painted Blood CDs (2009) With DVD; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Anatomy Lesson CD music
$19.79 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals mixed relatively dry and upfront, giving the album a bracing, fist-to-the-face force. Jackhammer tracks such as "Hate Worldwide" and "Psychopathy Red" are short, no muss-no fuss blasts of double kick drum, minor key-riffing fury, with an unrelenting intensity that requires little in the way of sonic or textural variation. The title track, on the other hand, is a somewhat slower dose ...
| | Dethklok Metalocalypse: The Dethalbum CD (2007)
Anatomy Lesson music CDs
$12.19 THE DETHALBUM is an outgrowth of the hit cartoon series METALOCALYPSE, about over-the-top, fictional black metal act Dethklok. Despite the comedic origins of the project, series creator and Berklee School of Music grad Brendon Small puts a surprising amount of effort and craft into making this sound like actual black metal. Sure, ...

| | Slayer Haunting The Chapel CD (1984)
Anatomy Lesson album
$8.35 Digitally remastered by Eddie Schreyer (November 1993, Future Disc).
Boasting the awesome "Chemical Warfare," a regular staple of Slayer's live shows, the Haunting the Chapel EP was a more crucial stepping stone in the legendary L.A. band's career development than many give it credit for. Issued in between the band's very promising debut and the following year's more sonically ripened Hell Awaits, Haunting the Chapel offers important clues about this transition period, which saw Slayer's rock-based song structures give way to the non-linear, genre-defining style thereafter regarded as thrash metal's signature sound. Among the uniformly solid cuts here, the enduring fan favorite "Captor of Sin" is another highlight, making this a well-recommended release for committed Slayer fans. [Some CD versions of Slayer's ...
| | Stryper Murder By Pride CD (2009)
Anatomy Lesson CD music
$10.65 After the original Stryper lineup (minus bassist Tim Gaines) reunited for 2005's somewhat alternative/nu-metal tinged REBORN, the band made a stylistic return to form with MURDER BY PRIDE. Brimming with harmonized twin guitar leads, big hair metal-approved shout-along hooks, and Michael Sweet's trademark soaring, Dennis DeYoung-esque vocals, the album rivals the best of Styper's `80s output, including the genre-defining TO HELL WITH THE DEVIL. Even casual fans who only know the band's mega-hit power ballad "Honestly" will find a lot to like in the piano-driven, Beatles-reminiscent "Alive." Elsewhere, songs such as the pounding, ...

| | Joe Lally There To Here CD (2006)
Anatomy Lesson CD music
$9.55 With bands like the White Stripes and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs forgoing them entirely, bassists don't get a lot of love these days. Joe Lally, formerly of Fugazi, aims to recapture the days when basses were lead instruments--as in Mike Watt's various bands--on his debut THERE TO HERE. His spare ...
