Testament: Alex Skolnick (guitar); Chuck Billy, Greg Christian, Paul Bostaph, Eric Peterson. Personnel: Chuck Billy (vocals); Eric Peterson (guitar); Greg Christian (bass guitar); Paul Bostaph (drums, cymbals). Nine long years since their last studio album of new material (1999's THE GATHERING), Testament returned with a brutally melodic set fittingly titled THE FORMATION OF DAMNATION. Vocalist Chuck Billy's winning battle with cancer inspired most of the group's original lineup to reconvene, with the exception of the ever-changing drum throne occupied here by former Forbidden/Slayer member Paul Bostaph. Lyrically, the Bay Area thrash legends are well-known for tackling social and political fare. For DAMNATION, principal co-writers Billy and guitarist Eric Peterson deliver commentaries on 9/11 ("The Evil Has Landed"), government corruption ("The Formation Of Damnation"), and spirituality ("Afterlife"). Polished by metal's go-to engineer Andy Sneap, DAMNATION is arguably the best sounding Testament release since 1994's LOW. Testament has endured just about every single calamity a rock band can during their lengthy history: bandmembers coming and going, label switches, and most seriously, a bandmember's successful battle against cancer (singer Chuck Billy). But after all these years, Testament is still going strong, and to celebrate their 25th year anniversary since their initial formation, four-fifths of the group's definitive, best-known lineup have reunited for their first appearance on a studio album in 16 years, for 2008's Formation of Damnation. With drummer Louie Clemente being the only no-show (former Slayer drummer Paul Bostaph, who had briefly played in Testament, takes his spot here), the classic Testament thrash sound lives on in such tracks as the title track and "The Persecuted Won't Forget" (the latter of which puts the speedy drum skills Bostaph perfected in Slayer to good use). The group also offers a song that focuses on the horrors that unfolded in New York City on 9/11 ("The Evil Has Landed"), albeit nearly seven years after the fact. As one of the '80s-era thrash bands who never strayed far from their original path (if anything, they only got heavier as the years progressed), Testament's trademark thrash is, expectedly, all over Formation of Damnation. ~ Greg PratoKerrang (Magazine) (p.50) - "THE FORMATION OF DAMNATION is a solid, unfussy album that gets the job done..." Formation Of Damnation Music Testament Formation Of Damnation Songs Formation Of Damnation Music Formation Of Damnation Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews not a great comeback but Awesome should be the word It seems like Testament never broke apart. Doesn't seem like a comeback album but a continuity in their career. Sound wise guitars sound like the low era specially for the heaviness. Very melodic with great guitar solos and lots of technicality. Billy sounds great as usual and Bostaph wow...Skolnick well you know, flawless and even Peterson's solo contributions ae great. The band sounds fearless and very powerful. Like listening to old Testament...Well produced, off course Andy Sneap...If you like Testament have no fear of buying the cd... Stellar Album This is Grade A Testament, no question at all. Henchmen Ride, The Persecuted Wont Forget, FEAR all totally tear it up. There is not a weak track on the album, so if you're a fan of the band, what are you waiting for? Well worth the wait.
Album of the year so far. Submitted by hurrifelix (Beacon, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
The Boys are Back with a Vengeance... It has been a long time coming, but well worth the wait. Chuck Billy and the boys are back and do not disappoint with their latest effort. I used to be into all of the metal bands in the 80's and 90's and watch so many sell out to conformity, but Testament is back to good old fashion metal at its finest. I found myself thrashing out like I did back in the day to several songs on this cd. Do yourself a favor and buy it because you WILL not be disappointed! Submitted by timmyache (N. As good as ever This cd finds Testament in top form. Combines the best elements of Low and The Gathering, with a little of Demonic sprinkled in. In my opinion, the best song on here is More Than Meets the Eye, but they all are well above average. Submitted by fcmlefty (Fergus Falls, MN) Was This Review Helpful? Critics might accuse New Jersey thrash veterans Overkill of making the same album over and over (similar comments can been made about revered bands such as AC/DC and Dio), but the truth is that that's exactly how metal fans want it. Overkill's legacy of unforgiving, guttural heaviness and warp-speed tempos continues with 2007's IMMORTALIS. The album features a guest spot from Randy Blythe of new torchbearers Lamb of God. Get thrashed, folks. Unlike other veteran metal acts whose dedication to the genre peters out as the years rack ...
| | Exodus Atrocity Exhibition: Exhibit A CD (2007)
Formation Of Damnation
$13.29 San Francisco thrash veterans Exodus are old-school enough to count Metallica's Kirk Hammett as a founding member, but 27 years on, they're still banging heads with a ferocity many of their peers can't match. Loaded to bursting with the kind of rapid-fire, aggressive guitar that made the Bay Area ground zero for '80s metal, ATROCITY EXHIBITION cruises along with power and focus. Tracks like "Riot Act" take off on the high-octane blitz of second-generation acts like Anthrax that Exodus gave birth to, and moodier, mammoth numbers like the title track feature both speed and power in equal measures. Thrash purists who lament the death of the real thing will rejoice in this still-furious act's new vigor. With the untimely passing of founding vocalist Paul Baloff in 2002, and the subsequent, short-lived reunion with his original successor, Steve Zetro Souza, for 2004's acclaimed comeback LP, Tempo of the Damned, Bay Area thrash metal kings Exodus were forced to audition a new frontman for the first time in 20 years before moving on with their resuscitated career. Rob Dukes, a relative unknown, ...

Formation Of Damnation
$15.05 Initial pressings included a bonus disc with the following: CD 2 (Bonus Disc): 1. Find My Freedom (Japan Bonus Track) 2. See The Night (Bonus track) 3. As Long As I Fall - video (enhanced) 4. EPK incl. Making of video (enhanced) The unprecedented worldwide success of multinational British-based power metallers DragonForce has cast an unexpected light upon German speed metal trailblazers Helloween. Perhaps the first band to convincingly combine thrash metal intensity with the melody and majestic imagery of the NWOBHM, and by extension the blueprint upon which DragonForce based their "extreme power metal" style, Helloween were a heavy metal institution, but one that had very much fallen by the wayside upon the departure of classic-era singer Michael Kiske and founder/guitarist Kai Hansen in the mid-'90s. Singer Andi Deris has been a permanent fixture ever since, but the band has found stable lineups difficult to come ...
| | Death Angel Killing Season CD (2008)
Formation Of Damnation
$12.55 Personnel: Rob Cavestany (vocals, guitar); Andrew Galeon (vocals, drums); Brian Posehn, Mark Osegueda, Scott Ian (vocals). Audio Mixer: Nick Raskulinecz. Recording information: Studio 606, Northridge, CA. Almost four years after Death Angel's reunion album, THE ART OF DYING, the veteran San Francisco thrash-metal group set out to prove that that record wasn't a one-off fluke with 2008's KILLING SEASON. A vibrant set that recaptures the act's late-'80s fever pitch, the outing finds the band in top-notch form (see the dynamic "Lord of Hate"), with Mark Osegueda's powerful vocals and Rob Cavestany's virtuosic guitar playing still standing out as the ensemble's calling cards. Killing Season is Death Angel's second collection of brand new studio material since getting back together in the mid-'00s, and many observers may reasonably presume that its timing really couldn't have been better for coinciding with a genuine, worldwide thrash revival. But, ironically, while legions of new millennium ...

Amon Amarth: Johan Hegg (vocals); Johan Söderberg, Olavi Mikkonen (guitar); Ted Lundström (bass guitar); Fredrik Andersson (drums). The modern barbarians of Amon Amarth are dedicated to mining their native Sweden's Viking past for tales of battle glory and eternal feasting that they can build into their colossally melodic death metal. Their seventh album, TWILIGHT OF THE THUNDER GOD, makes plain its mission from the album cover, featuring the Mighty Thor wielding his mystic hammer against a giant dragon. The music itself bludgeons the listener just like that warhammer, with sturdy ...
