HEAD ON (1971) is the most ambitious and adventurous work in Bobby Hutcherson's discography. Though the composer/bandleader/vibraphonist did contribute one tune ("Mtume"), HEAD ON mostly features the ambitious compositions and arrangements of Todd Cochran, who also plays piano on the session. The resulting music is dense and polyrhythmic, and bracing, drawing parallels to Miles Davis's BITCHES BREW and other first wave fusion albums. Cochran arranges for the 18-piece group here with a mad scientist's zeal but still manages to create precise orchestral textures. Elements of chamber music and funk abound, and Hutcherson's clear, cool marimba and vibraphone work shimmers throughout. This release marks the album's first appearance on CD, giving Hutcherson fans reason to rejoice. Featuring the work of obscure composer/pianist Todd Cochrane, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson's 1971 album Head On is a highly cerebral and atmospheric affair that is somewhat different than his other equally experimental '70s work. Although the album does feature more of the avant-garde jazz that Hutcherson was exploring during this period, Cochrane's material is heavily influenced by contemporary classical music, and accordingly Head On is more of an exercise in reflective, layered jazz than rambunctious freebop -- though it does offer some of that, too. Suitably, Hutcherson brought together a large ensemble that featured a bevy of journeyman jazz artists, including the vastly underappreciated trumpeter/flügelhornist Oscar Brashear, saxophonist Harold Land, electric pianist William Henderson, drummer Stix Hooper, and bassist Reggie Johnson, among many others. Beginning with Cochrane's three-part suite "At the Source," Head On moves from similar Stravinsky-esque ensemble pieces to the "West Coast cool meets free jazz" big-band sounds of tracks like Hutcherson's "Mtume." In that sense, the album is reminiscent of work by such similar-minded artists of the period as Detroit trumpeter Marcus Belgrave (Gemini II) and his Motown Tribe contemporary Phil Ranelin (Vibes from the Tribe). Fans of expansive, searching '70s jazz will definitely want to seek Head On out. ~ Matt Collar

| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Head On
$12.89 Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Ahmed Abdul-Malik (bass instrument); Shadow Wilson (drums). Liner Note Authors: Larry Appelbaum; Robin D.G. Kelley; Ira Gitler; Lewis Porter; Amiri Baraka; Stanley Crouch; Ashley Kahn. Recording information: Carnegie Hall, New York, NY (11/29/1957). Larry Appelbaum, the recording lab supervisor at the Library of Congress, came across this tape by accident while transferring the library's tape archive to digital. What a find. Forget the Five Spot recording that sounds like it was recorded inside of a tunnel from the far end. The sound here is wonderfully present and contemporary. More importantly, this band -- which also included drummer Shadow Wilson and bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik -- had it right on November 29, 1957, at Carnegie Hall. The John Coltrane on this date is far more assured than he had been four months earlier on the Five Spot date and on the initial Prestige ...
| | Booker Ervin Tex Book Tenor CD (2005)
Head On
$10.25 Personnel: Booker Ervin (tenor saxophone); Booker Ervin; Jan Arnet (double bass); Woody Shaw (trumpet); Kenny Barron (piano); Billy Higgins (drums). Liner Note Author: Michael Cuscuna. Recording information: Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, NJ (06/24/1968). Tex Book Tenor was recorded in 1968 as a follow-up to Booker Ervin's debut date for Blue Note, The In Between, which was released in January of the same year. (Ervin had made two records for Pacific Jazz, which is now owned, like Blue Note, by EMI.) The album remained unreleased until 1976, when it was issued with an also unreleased Horace Parlan date on a double LP called Back from the Gig. This is its first appearance on CD. The lineup is stellar and includes Billy Higgins, Woody Shaw, Kenny Barron, and bassist Jan Arnet from Czechoslovakia. Barron and Ervin had worked together before, and Arnet had worked with Ervin three years earlier as a touring partner ...
| | Stanley Turrentine Return Of The Prodigal Son CD (2008)
Head On
$9.59 Tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine is best known for his soul-jazz outings of the 1960s, and that feeling suffuses the 1967 session recordings collected on THE RETURN OF THE PRODIGAL SON. Working with a tentet--including a crack rhythm section of bassist Bob Cranshaw, drummer Ray Lucas, and pianist McCoy Tyner--Turrentine takes on a program of blues, ballads, standards and Latin-tinged tunes. Duke Pearson's rich, ear-catching arrangements make full use of the larger group instrumentation, but it's the dynamism of the rhythm section and Turrentine's soulful lines that stand out. Highlights include the saxman's take on several classic R&B tunes, including "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Dr. Feelgood." Stanley Turrentine is generally pegged as a soul-jazz man but also has proven quite adept in several other styles of modern jazz, as heard on this diverse compilation of tunes from three initially unreleased Blue Note dates with a larger ensemble. While hitting up a handful of ...
| | Art Farmer Brass Shout/The Aztec Suite: Seven Moods In Brass CD (2006)
Head On
$10.25 Trumpeter and flugelhornist Art Farmer's thoughtfully mellow style made him one of the most enduring presences in jazz, spanning decades and overriding trends. BRASS SESSIONS collects two separate, rare, and long unavailable Art Farmer LPs circa 1959-60. BRASS SHOUT features the tenor sax and bright, classy arrangements of Benny Golson and a stellar roster of brass accompanists, including trumpter Lee Morgan, french hornist Julius Watkins, and trombonist Curtis Fuller. AZTEC SUITE is a nod to the Afro-Cuban/Latin influence on bebop. There are standards featuring lots of Latin percussion, but the centerpiece is the stimulating 16-minute title track, composed by Chico O'Farrill. This Gambit CD compilation combines the complete contents of two long unavailable records that Art Farmer made for United ...
