Originally self-released in 2002 in an edition of only 3,000 copies, the plain-spoken politics (the title of this album is not to be taken lightly) and bare-bones production of Revolutionary, Vol. 1 missed MTV and Rap City entirely, surprise surprise. However, the album built enough underground buzz, helped by the more widely distributed Revolutionary, Vol. 2 the following year, that it was reissued in 2004, sounding as up-to-date as ever. Immortal Technique works the same political side of the street as Dead Prez and the Coup, but much like Chuck D, the godfather of the political rap scene, the Peruvian-born rapper never lets his ideas get in the way of his flow, and manages to express complex and reasoned opinions, only occasionally devolving into simple sloganeering. Those who found the beats on Revolutionary, Vol. 2 too skeletal for their likes, however, will likely find its predecessor even tougher sledding; however, the homemade-sounding production is perfectly suitable for the noncorporate sentiments of Immortal Technique's lyrics, and has a similar rough-edged charm. ~ Stewart Mason

After the huge success of the Fugees' THE SCORE, Pras Michel was easily the quietest member of the group; outside of the ubiquitous 1998 hit "Ghetto Supastar" from the movie BULWORTH, followed by a rather rushed debut of the same name, Pras was mostly musically silent. Apparently he was gathering his energies, because he returned with a flourish on 2005's enjoyable and thoughtful WIN LOSE OR DRAW.
On "Light My Fire," the former Fugee rather modestly states, "still Pras/fat hooks/I'm no Nas." While Queensbridge's aforementioned king is a high standard to live up to, Pras is capable of imparting insight in his own subtle manner, while peeling off some head-turning lines on the contemplative "For Love" and the self-deprecating "Mistakes." Furthermore, his hooks are unique. On "Haven't Found," for example, he reworks a classic U2 riff, adding his own absorbing adornments and dropping a neat political oration over the resultant beat with style to spare. After his conspicuous silence, Pras Michel had a good deal to say on WIN LOSE OR DRAW, making it a hearty, absorbing album.

Chill Factory is a combination of New Age, Chill, Downtempo, World Music, and Soundtrack music. "I've been working nights as a massage therapist for several years and I realized that it was time to record an album dedicated to relaxation," explains Greenleaf. "It started out as a simple project focusing on droning hypnotic soundscapes but it quickly changed into something much more," Greenleaf remembers. While the album is very atmospheric, it also includes some beautiful world music inspired from Jeff's experience in the UCSB Middle Eastern Ensemble, Indian Ensemble, and Balinese Gamelan. "As an anthropology major, I focused my cultural interests strictly on the arts, specifically ethnomusicology," adds Greenleaf. Some of the songs, including "Sleepwalk to India" and "Bali Sunset" take you on a musical journey throughout the far east. Chill Factory is exactly what the title suggests: It's a downtempo, electronic chill album that truly ignites something magical in the listener. Jeff also teaches blind children how to read and write Braille music notation. "To blind children, sounds are unconfirmed by visual impression," says Greenleaf. "I just give them the basic tools they need to create their own wildly original music." Jeff Greenleaf has played guitar, harmonica, keyboards, and bass in various rock bands for the past 20 years.When he moved to Santa Barbara in his college years, Jeff started to write, record, and perform his original music as a solo act.
