"The Chairman of the Board" died in May of 1998, yet his music sounds as vital and relevant today as ever. Released on the 10th anniversary of his death--in coordination with a slew of DVD releases commemorating the singer's acting career as well as an official U.S. Postal Service stamp--NOTHING BUT THE BEST provides an excellent look at Sinatra's tenure at the Reprise label. Among the album's 22 vintage cuts are classics such as "The Way You Look Tonight," "Luck Be a Lady," "Strangers in the Night," and "My Way." The disc also contains a bonus track in the previously unreleased recording of "Body and Soul." Diehard Sinatra fans will likely own most of this material, yet as a greatest hits set (albeit covering the Reprise years only) NOTHING BUT THE BEST lives up to its title. Released to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Frank Sinatra's death, Nothing But the Best is indeed one of the best single-disc compilations ever released on Sinatra. This isn't a career overview, however, since it begins with his inaugural Reprise recordings circa 1960 and surveys the rest of the '60s (including only two tracks not from the '60s). This was the age of Sinatra as the hard-swinging Chairman of the Board, illustrated perfectly by "Luck Be a Lady" and "My Kind of Town." But it was also the age of wistful, middle-aged material like "Summer Wind," "Strangers in the Night," and, of course, "It Was a Very Good Year." And it was also the age when Sinatra had the freedom to record with everyone he wanted to record with, whether it was Count Basie or Antonio Carlos Jobim or his daughter Nancy (the latter on the 1967 chart-topper "Somethin' Stupid"). All of those periods are represented on Nothing But the Best, which takes its place above the best previous Reprise collection, Sinatra Reprise: The Very Good Years, even though it somehow omits one of his classics, "Love and Marriage." For this compilation, Reprise also commissioned new 2008 remasters of each track, which sound better than any previous, and added a new bonus track: a version of "Body and Soul" with a vocal recorded in 1984 laid over a 2007 arrangement by Torrie Zito and Frank Sinatra, Jr. ~ John BushRecord Collector (magazine) (p.96) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "It's a nice selection of tracks from Sinatra's Reprise years, with all the classics." An Introduction to Sinatra "Nothing But The Best" is a masterful
introduction sampler to the artistry of Frank Sinatra. Unlike other great musical masters of the past, we know exactly what Sinatra intended his work to sound like and this selection of songs proves once again his immense talent.
By all means, begin listening to Sinatra with this album, but to really see his true genius get a hold of his
Capital "concept" albums and you will begin a journey into the greatest collection of American music ever recorded. Sinatra elevated the American songbook to a level of high art. He practically invented the long playing album and the way we all listen to music as a soundtrack to our lives. Submitted by Robert (Washington D.C.) Was This Review Helpful? YES INDEED! SINATRA“s latest release, NOTHING BUT THE BEST, produced by Charles Pignone“s sensitivity, may be commented by several ways. Historically, for its musical selection, order of the songs, for its escellence concerning to visual aspects and program, quality of sleeve and impression, for its pictures and so on. As a matter of fact, I“d rather point out the job made by Walsh, Pignone and Woodson, reviewing the original tapes and remixing them. And the remasterization done by Grundman and its terrifc competence. Congratulations to Nancy, Franklin, Mrs. Nancy Sinatra, Tina, Hefti, Soldo and each one that made this marvelous project succeed! Nothing But The Best
$10.55 Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Nelson Riddle, Billy May (arranger, conductor). Recorded between 1953 and 1960. Includes liner notes by Bruce Springsteen and Pete Hamill. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Bob Norberg (Capitol Mastering). Audio Remasterer: Bob Norberg. Recording information: 1953-196?. Photographer: Sid Avery. Arranger: Nelson Riddle. A good single-disc compilation of his Capitol years, covering 1953 to the beginning of the 1960s. His Capitol output was so extensive that it's impossible for a 20-song anthology to give a comprehensive overview even of the highlights. Also, as this focuses on the albums he made with Capitol, some of his biggest hits of the time are omitted, such as "Learnin' the Blues," "Hey! Jealous Lover," and "High ...

| | Dino: The Essential Dean Martin CD (2004)
Nothing But The Best
$11.55 30 Classic Capitol & Reprise Hits On 1 CD.
Personnel: Dean Martin (vocals). Liner Note Authors: Dean Martin; Deana Martin; Steven Van Zandt; Gail Martin Downey. Dino: The Essential Dean Martin is an attempt by Capitol Records to fill up a single CD to the brim (30 tracks in nearly 78 minutes) with Dean Martin hits in the manner of the Beatles' 1. It's a welcome development from a label that was previously content to survey the same territory on the 1998 collection Greatest Hits: King of Cool, which contained only 16 tracks and ran less than 50 minutes. Martin put 36 recordings in the pop singles charts between 1949 and 1969, and 23 of them are found here. Of the four Top 40 hits not included, the most notable is the 1964 version of "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You." The collection does include the 1960 non-hit version of that song instead, a decision that probably was made to reduce the number of essentially ...
