The metal singer Warrel Dane is a cut above many of his peers, with a nuanced vocal approach that belies the genre's usual cookie-cutter, guttural stylings. But even though he's sensitive, he's still no wimp. "When We Pray" skewers a world gone wrong, propelled by scorching guitar riffs and Dane's sneering vocals, while "Messenger" and "Obey" both feature the smoking fields of Armageddon as a backdrop. There's also a well-chosen cover, U.K. goth pioneers the Sisters Of Mercy's "Lucretia My Reflection," complete with a faithful rendering of Sisters frontman Andrew Eldritch's Vincent Price-like incantations.

THE album of the year 2008! excellent cd, great tunes, passionate delivery! Buy this if you love good music, not just metal. Submitted by Brentamos (Maineville, OH USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Perfect Album Well, Nevermore this is NOT- in fact I like it better. Someone told me to expect different & that is exactly what we get here.
With 2 kick a** guitarists on board (from Himsa & Soilwork respectively), I don’t know what it is, (maybe the chord progressions?), but the guitars are so damn engaging. I mean I REALLY dig the guitar work on this album. Riffs are great, the melody is great, & the leads are powerful & so tastefully done.
The songwriting is bleak, downright depressing at times, heartfelt & thought provokingly excellent. And that IS the point here- the songwriting is fantastic. Not a crummy song here.
Highlight tunes: When We Pray, Let You Down, The Day the Rats Went to War & the outstanding re-do of Paul Simon’s Patterns (what tasty guitar playing on that song!) Submitted by hurrifelix (Beacon, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
All you could ever want from a Nevermore side project & more From beginning to end this album is flat out great. Warrel worked in his goth influences (and not just from covering a Sisters of Mercy song) and brought forth the range of emotions expected from such music. It still has a Nevermore feel to it, some of the songs on there would've definitely fit on an album with some minor tweaks, but by using piano on certain songs it adds a different depth to the album. Favorite songs are "Let You Down", "Equilibrium" and "The Day the Rats Went To War." Submitted by Stephen (Hopatcong, NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
