| | Justin Bieber My World CD (2009) Enhanced CD
Miroque Vol. 13-Miroque
$7.96 Within a couple years, Canadian teenager Justin Bieber went from covering Usher on YouTube to working with Usher. An internet sensation from his renditions of several pop and pop-oriented R&B hits, he was still only 15 years old when he released this, his first album -- though it's more like an EP since it is contains only seven songs that are 25 minutes in duration. Given the comfort level he showed in the material he covered, My World plays it straight, based on the kind of age-appropriate content that would fill out a release from a younger Chris ...
| | Rick Derringer Sky Is Falling CD (2009)
Miroque Vol. 13-Miroque
$8.80 Released on Fuel 2000, The Sky Is Falling is actually a reissue of the Doin' Business As... Derringer, Bogert & Appice album that was first released in Europe in 2001. In this short-lived power trio, guitarist and producer Rick Derringer reportedly "replaced" Jeff Beck in the "follow-up" to 1973's Beck, Bogert & Appice album (their rhythm section is, of course, made up of ex-Vanilla Fudge members bassist Tim Bogert and rock & roll über-drummer Carmine Appice. Nah. While this doesn't reach those lofty heights. Strictly out of its time and element -- from the songs to the production -- as a hard rock album with well-written compositions, excellent vocals, and musicianship, it works very well. Hearing the set in 2001 was just plain weird given what else was going on in popular music at the time. Hearing it in 2009 with its new title feels almost right, since rock music is deliberately trying to return to the 1970s. These cats are ...
| | Chet Baker Last Great Concert: My Favourite Songs Vol. I & II CDs (2004)
Miroque Vol. 13-Miroque
$14.25 This 1988 release sees Chet Baker on stage in Funkhaus Hannover, West Germany. This concert is the last authorized recording by the legendary trumpeter and singer. In fact, Baker was found on the pavement outside an Amsterdam hotel, dead under mysterious circumstances, only two weeks after this concert was recorded. Surprisingly, however, Baker's trumpet playing is full of life and energy on this release. It is said that he was inspired by the setting. Accompanied by a full orchestra, big band, and old friends, Herb Geller (alto sax) and Walter Norris (piano), Baker rises to the occasion, performing with what might be termed, "grace and sophistication" on all seven tracks. Playing some of the most heartfelt solos of his career, Baker seems to hauntingly eulogize his own imminent passing. And his tender vocal musings on "My Funny Valentine" (a lyric which Baker undeniably owns) and "I Fall in Love Too Easily" make THE LAST GREAT CONCERT a respectable, indeed, an endearing farewell to a jazz icon.
Liner notes include an interview with Matthias Winckelmann.
Personnel: Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet); Chet Baker ; M. Blazejewska-Woller, H. Bosse, H. Jahreis, H. Yashima, ...
