Long-running Bay Area headbangers Imagika have kept the fire burning for dynamic power metal since 1994. Immediately recognizable by the wailing vocals essential to the genre, Imagika nonetheless has some tricks up their sleeves to prevent them from being a cookie-cutter affair. "Behind Immortal" has a pile-driving riff and slower tempo, within which the vocals hang like a dense, icy fog, and the title track's moody melodicism and acoustic guitars resemble Alice in Chains. For the most part, however, this is pedal-to-the-metal American power metal, not as overwrought as its European counterpart, and speckled with thrash grit. Feast For The Hated
$12.95 Let's say, for the sake of argument, that a headbanger who knew a lot about metal (past and present) but was unfamiliar with Hibria was exposed to Defying the Rules during a blindfold test. Unable to identify Hibria, the headbanger was still asked to guess what year the CD was recorded -- and understandably, he or she would be likely to respond, "Probably around 1984 or 1985? Sometime in the early to mid-'80s perhaps?" Well, wrong answer, but certainly an understandable guess. Although recorded in 2004, Defying the Rules is an album that, stylistically, could have been recorded at least 20 years earlier. Hibria is part of the power metal revival movement; they recorded their first demo in 1997, but stylistically, these metalheads are a total throwback to the days when Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Queensr˙che, Helloween, and Ronnie James Dio reigned supreme. Their forceful yet consistently melodic work isn't the least bit groundbreaking, but then, a long list of artists in a variety of genres have provided worthwhile, ...

| | Death Angel Killing Season CD (2008)
Feast For The Hated
$12.55 Almost four years after Death Angel's reunion album, THE ART OF DYING, the veteran San Francisco thrash-metal group set out to prove that that record wasn't a one-off fluke with 2008's KILLING SEASON. A vibrant set that recaptures the act's late-'80s fever pitch, the outing finds the band in top-notch form (see the dynamic "Lord of Hate"), with Mark Osegueda's powerful vocals and Rob Cavestany's virtuosic guitar playing still standing out as the ensemble's calling cards.
Killing Season is Death Angel's second collection of brand new studio material since getting back together in the mid-'00s, and many observers may reasonably presume that its timing really couldn't have been better for coinciding with a genuine, worldwide thrash revival. But, ironically, while legions of new millennium kids who were still wearing diapers in 1983 are assiduously trying to replicate that original sonic template to the letter; the original precocious teens of thrash (drummer Andy Galeon was famously just 14 when Death Angel released their first LP) have not surprisingly matured and moved on with their art over the past 20 years. So it should ...

| | Headhunter Parasite Of Society CD (2008)
Feast For The Hated
$13.19 Whenever a band reunites after having been inactive for more than a decade, fans naturally wonder if the band will pick up where it left off stylistically or move in a different direction. In Headhunter's case, it is definitely the former rather than the latter; Parasite of Society, Headhunter's first new studio album in 13 years, picks up where the German outfit's early- to mid-'90s recordings left off. Back then, Headhunter was often described as a band that was relevant to both thrash metal and power metal -- and that approach is alive and well on forceful yet melodic tracks such as "Doomsday for the Prayer," "Read My Lips," "Egomaniac," and "Silverskull." Headhunter's thrashiness decreases on an enjoyable cover of Skid Row's power ballad "18 and Life," but much of the time, Parasite of Society is a perfect example of a CD that has one foot in thrash metal and the other in power metal, and considering the relationship between the two, that is perfectly natural. Thrash metal/speed metal, after all, came out of power metal; thrash/speed metal thrived when, in the '80s, Motörhead (arguably the first thrash metal/speed metal band), Venom, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, ...
