Betty Marolany album
$12.09 The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing debut would expect. No, it's the sound of the record: immediate, forceful, crystalline; it's in-your-face compelling and impossible to ignore. 11:11 features 11 new compositions, dedicated to 11 musical artists (not all guitarists, either) who have had an influence on the duo. Recorded in Ixtapa, Mexico, the set was self-produced with the exception of two cuts, which were co-produced with John Leckie. Throughout, Rodrigo y Gabriela showcase their metal chops as part and parcel of their Mexican guitar heritage. They've not simply melded the two, but have created an entirely different form of music for the acoustic guitar in the process. It's infectious and accessible, full of pathos, intensity, passion, and color.
Audio Mixer: Colin Richardson.
Arranger: Rodrigo y Gabriela.
| | Afro-Cuban All Stars Toda Cuba Le Gusta CD (1997)
Betty Marolany CD music
$15.89 A TODOS CUBA LE GUSTA was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Performance.
A lively, spontaneous record that manages to sound both relaxed and forceful at the same time, A Toda Cuba Le Gusta shows off the talents of many of Cuba's elder statesmen of Afro-Cuban jazz. Over gently pulsating conga grooves and low-register ostinatos, such luminaries as pianist Ruben Gonzalez and singer Manuel "Puntillita" Licea float dramatic melodies, as their solo contributions are answered by brass section chords as thick and sweet as cane syrup. Although it is Ruben Gonzalez' presence on this album that gets the most attention, his tendency towards relentless chromaticism becomes tiresome early on, especially when it is contrasted with the exquisite phrasing and tremulous beauty of singers such as Licea, Raul Planas, and Ibrahum Ferrer. As would be expected, the trumpets blare with traditional Cuban bravado, evoking gentle romance and fiery passion with equal ease. Even the resident gringo, Ry Cooder, gets in some choice licks on "Alto Songo." The relative lack of dynamic movement in most of these songs may lead to them blending together in the ear of the listener, but the inherent tunefulness of each track, not to mention the sheer drive that this band is capable of summoning, cancels that complaint out nicely. An important collaboration and a promising debut. ~ Daniel Gioffre

| | Andrea Bocelli Cieli Di Toscana CD (2001)
Betty Marolany CD music
$10.69 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable only on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Dim the lights and uncork the wine. The avatar of romance Italian-style, is back. After devoting himself for a time to his operatic aspirations, Andrea Bocelli returns to the milieu where he achieved international stardom. CIELI DI TOSCANA harks back to ROMANZA, his breakthrough 1997 release that captivated a multitude of admirers, and picks up where his last pop album, SOGNO, left off. The album captures the warm-voiced tenor at what he does best: professing the joys and sorrows of love through his heartfelt renditions of lush, ultra-romantic ballads.
Bocelli hews to the winning formula of the earlier discs, relying once again on the songwriting skills of Francesco Sartori and David Foster, among others, for the soaring, dramatic tunes that are his stock in trade. Sumptuously produced songs such as "Mille Lune Mille Onde," "Chiara," and "Mascagni" are evocative soundscapes of Bocelli's cherished Tuscan homeland, tailor-made vehicles for the singer's romantic vocal stylings. Other notable tracks include "L'Abitudine," partnering the tenor with newcomer Helena for the obligatory love duet, and "L'Incontro," featuring Bono in the recitation of a poem written by Bocelli. CIELI DI TOSCANA has the hallmarks of another crowd-pleasing effort by this enormously popular artist.

| | D H Spider Spiders From Earth CD (2007)
Betty Marolany album
$20.25 This CD was conceived as I sat on my stoop during a hot spell in New York. It was around 3 in the morning and I sat with my Strat going through some songs when I hit upon another idea for an old song called "Difficult."I knew right away that I had to commit this bad boy to tape. I set it up with my friend, Rinky, whose band I had played bass in several years ago. Before the first session, I worked on a new song and demoed it at home. This was "The Dark" whose working title was actually "Barker 7" for some inexplicable reason. I transferred over the backing tracks at the studio and added vocals. Then we started recording "(You can be so) Difficult," a song written by my old pal, Mick Mahoney, rehearsed (and added to) by Nervous Wrecks, my first and only London band."When Winter Comes" might well have been called "When The Blues Come" as it was written in a sad moment at my parent's home in England while I was missing my girlfriend back in New York."Surrender to the Moment," the Stones' "Flight 505" and "Only One Girl" are the only other songs presented here that were wholly recorded at Rinky's Third Stone recording studio. The rest were recorded at my own Churchill Sound studio in Sunnyside Gardens, NY. "Beach Boy Frenzy" was also written under a great deal of stress when I had to leave my digs in Hoboken, NJ (because of a bed bug problem) for three days. I took my keyboards with me and came up with the chords and melody. I called it "Bed Bug Frenzy" before I realized the feel was very Brian Wilson, hence the title change! If you like the White Album I think you'll enjoy "spiders from earth" as, like "The Beatles," there's no musical continuity or prevailing sound. In the near future, I'll be releasing a Hollywood Spiders record, but for now, it's still held captive! As of June 2009 there should be another record out called "Natural" which, if you love "spiders," should appeal very strongly to you. Thanks for buying or listening to "spiders from earth." Thanks also for the people who have already bought it, especially the bloke in Australia who was simply browsing! Good on ya, Cobber! The lovely Natty Mod redesigned my web (ha ha!), and you can get caught up in it at MySpace.com/hollywoodspiders.All good wishes,Spider
