| | Moby 18 CD (2002)
Realization
$11.39 "18" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
Continuing to deliver the kind of soulful electronica with an ethereal sheen that made PLAY such a breakthrough album for him, Moby keeps the good vibrations going on the equally engaging follow-up 18. Having previously drawn from such disparate sources as subtle dance beats and samples of African-American spirituals, it's not surprising that this devout Christian once again looked to the church for recruits. This time around the talents of The Shining Light Gospel Choir (the revival-like "I'm Not Worried At All" and the sweeping "In My Heart") and the recently ordained Sinead O'Connor (the lush "Harbour") get tapped.
Moby avoids making 18 a strictly austere affair by throwing some beats onto the barbie in the shape of the thumping Angie Stone/M.C. Lyte collaboration "Jam For The Ladies" and the subtle cut-and-paste funk of "Sunday (The Day Before My Birthday)." Moby does a fine job manning the mike himself for the striking '80s-style electro-pop meditation "We Are All Made ...
| | Dimitri From Paris Sacrebleu CD (1996)
Realization
$8.39 For years, Paris had barely registered as a blip on the pop music radar screen. Beginning with the release of Daft Punk's Homework and the Source Lab compilations, however, the city burgeoned into one of the most promising scenes of fin-de-millennium culture--and Dimitri From Paris into one of its most important scenesters. SACREBLEU has it all; the stoned grooves of Kid Loco, the irony-free cheese of Air, the funky electro-pop of Daft Punk. On top of it all, Dimitri's hip retro-lounge style imparts an exquisitely cool vapidity that's comfortable in a world where too many things mean too much. If Grandmaster Flash or Derrick May had the entire Space Age Pop, Bacharach and Tito Puente collections, they would have made music that feels as good as SACREBLEU. But, alas, the French beat us to it.
1996 release, an album of neo-lounge music by French record-ing artist ...
| | Ellen Allien Thrills CD (2005)
Realization
$13.35 On 2003's Berlinette, Ellen Allien reveled in the stops and starts, in pinching her already-precision percussion stabs into tetchy bunches of sharp black commas and apostrophes. It made for music that was futuristic, excitingly tense, and, well, totally ...
| | Susumu Yokota Sakura CD (2000)
Realization
$12.95 Susumu Yokota has chosen an unusual path that revisits, contemplates, and deconstructs his own past. SAKURA completes the trilogy that began with Yokota's incipient IMAGE and reconciliatory MAGIC THREAD, bringing the re-enlightened artist to a new level of consciousness and musical mastery.
SAKURA opens with the elegant, Eno/Lanois-like melodic movements of "Saku," "Hagoromo," and "Tobiume," but ...

| | Art Farmer Baroque Sketches/The Time & The Place CD (2001)
Realization
$10.59 Two very different records by Art Farmer are combined on this Collectables CD reissue. Art Farmer enjoyed playing pieces with strong melodies, and the original concept of Baroque Sketches was to adapt the music of Johann Sebastian Bach into a jazz setting. After initial research, it was decided to also include works by Chopin and Albeniz, as well as John Lewis' "Little David's Fugue" and Sonny Rollins' "Alfie Theme." With arrangements by his former Jazztet partner Benny Golson, Farmer creates music that is entertaining, though unlikely to stand up to repeated listening. The Art Farmer Quintet are featured in a 1967 concert at the Museum of Modern Art in the second half of the disc, released originally as The Time and the Place. With arrangements by tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath, who is also present on the date, and a rhythm section made up of Cedar Walton, Walter Booker, and Mickey Roker, this live date mixes strong originals by Heath, one fairly well-known song from Broadway ("Make Someone Happy"), ...

| | Jonathan & Leigh Third And Main CD (1967) Import
Realization
$16.29 Jonathan and Leigh's sole album was half-decent, if hardly electrifying, early folk-rock, with that tentative getting-used-to-electric-folk sound heard on numerous New York-produced records of the mid-1960s. Jonathan Alden's songs (curiously, he is billed as "John Alden" in the composition credits) are fair, pensive numbers with easygoing, occasionally bittersweet melodies that generally stick to folk-rock's most optimistic face. They also sometimes reach for outside material, including a clumsily timed interpretation of Phil Ochs' "Changes," which must be the most covered folk-rock song never to become a hit for anyone who tried. When they attempt "Cocaine Blues," the result is, as ...

| | Zoe Lewis Cure For The Hiccups CD (2008)
Realization
$13.05 ZOE LEWIS hails originally from England but now makes Provincetown, MA her home. She's toured all over the world picking up musical influences and stories, plays anything from the piano to the spoons and is affectionately known as "A BAND IN A BODY!" She's a mixture of swing, acoustic funk, latin jazz and her fast-paced lyrics poke fun at modern society and praise the rambling delights of childhood, secret worlds and wandering love. Her song SMALL IS TREMENDOUS received much commercial success and can be heard on ads for MINI PRINGLES and TJ MAAX. Another of her songs: SHEEP was part of a PUTUMAYO compilation and became #1 in the children's satellite radio charts. A CURE FOR THE HICCUPS was recorded in England, Austin, Seattle and on Cape Cod and features an incredible mixture of musicians that Lewis has met on her travels: JULIE WOLF (Ani Difranco/Bruce Cockburn/Indigo Girls) onpiano and accordion, PAUL PEARCY (Dixie Chicks) ...
